Default Working Out Before Bed...

Just wanted to post a quick question about something that has been bugging me.

I have night class twice a week... right after work. So I am usually able to make it to the gym by about 9:00pm - 9:30pm. Which means I finish up by about 11:00pm - 11:15pm. I get home and eat, and shortly after, I head to bed.

Now I know its important to eat after your workout and have some sort of carbs. I also know that its important to eat just before bed (protein). How terrible is it for me to be eating carbs in my post-workout meal if I am only sleeping shortly after ?

During my cutting phases I try and eat my carbs more towards the morning/afternoon, but its a necessity to have carbs after I workout. I feel this is counter-productive.

Should I give up late night workouts in sight of my current cutting routine ?

As always, any help is appreciated.

Thank you,
R

I m doing the same thing as you, working out before bed, 3/4 of my workouts are close to my bed time. For carbs I usually eat 1 cup of brown rice before the workout. Then have 1.5 scoop of whey and 35-40g of waxy maize starch for my PWO shake. 30mins later have a large salad with some grill chicken or turkey breast.

I'm the opposite. After a good workout and a long day at school I am completely drained. I would rather just lay on my bed... making my PWO meal is always a hassle cause I just want to have a nap.

You just have to see what works for you. Some people are completely jacked up after a workout. Some could crash right after. I'm usually jacked, but I can go to sleep at anytime...

For me, its not a matter of 'not being able to sleep'. Working a full day, having class for 4 hours, then hitting the gym takes its toll on me. I'm usually able to fall right asleep.

I was just interested in seeing if I was doing my body more harm than good by eating 30-40grams of carbs before bed, while I'm in a cutting phase.

I dont see any harm. Itll take more than that just to replenish the glycogen you burned during the workout.

I can generally sleep through things if I put my mind to it. Normally I just tell myself how tired I am, relax and fall asleep

Not one problem. After 1.5 hours in the gym, throwing around heavy things, come home have a PWO shake, hot shower... your body is begging for the bed.

Maybe YOUR evening workouts are too light

I can literally fall asleep at any moment. One night I had a workout for about 1.5 hours, then came home, and drank my PWO shake. This is about 15 minutes after walking out of gym, i fell asleep half way through my shake, i woke up 6 hours later with half eaten, warm PWO shake. Point is, sleep is never a problem.

I guess everyone is different but I'm one of those people too. I guess all those endorphins and hormones that pop off due to lifting keep me up. Judging from the responses, it seems to be a very individual thing like Boyd mentioned. Some people react differently than others.
