Geez, I have no idea what would be good British brand protein. You may have to google and look for a British BB message board.

Excess cardio can break down your muscle. Look at professional marathon runners; do you want to look like them?

I think it's a myth that women should use light weights and high reps. Google max-ot program (it's free). Read it back to back. That's the program I follow (for the most part).

I lift weights HEAVY and Low reps (4-6 reps per sets) 3 times per week. I play league soccer on weekends... and I can definitely tell that it hinders my muscle gain (by comparing on and off season)... but I enjoy it anyways.

If you enjoy your classes, that's great. Just try to incorprate weight lifting more. Just switching your routine can break out the plateau sometimes.

My local (Canary Wharf) Waitrose (a chain supermarket) even carries Myoplex stuff - it certainly is available in London! Apart from online places there are two shops near Charing Cross - Body Active, in the shopping arcade in the subway under the Strand, and Workout World, just off to the side of the entrance to Embankment Station, across from the big sailing/watersports shop there - that do all the stuff you might want. I mention these because they're big and central. Holland & Barrett do their own brand of protein powders and they're everywhere. There's a GNC in the West One Plaza at Bond St. station (and several others around town). Even the Boots at Bond St. have a pretty good selection of sports nutrition supps.

Look around the forum and read the supplement reviews so you know what you're looking for before you hit the shops. All that stuff is available here!

you also may need to switch things up a bit...your body is prolly used to all of that, which is why you are at a maintenance level now vs. a fat loss level. Shock the body a bit and take up some weight training like the doc said, and it should stat to come off again.

I posted my update on weight loss plateau, and I pigged out last night because after three weeks of the scales not moving I got frustrated and ate like a pig, feel crap today but I am back on my diet and I have step today.
I also looked up the meal replacements and they still have all the same vitamins and such as slim fast so I don't see that it is totally necessary to switch from slim fast to another meal replacement???
I hope I can continue pass this plateau even though I have set myself back after my binge last night...

slim fast is not the same as most MRP's, ...look deeper, slim fast uses more sugar and other things...but...I think you should get off the MRP thngs personally...you should never replace food. You must eat. I would put a good healthy diet of 5 small meals per day up against any MRP diet. Don't replace food with liquids and shakes....shakes are a supplement to your diet...not your diet.

You are not listening to me. You want to look firm & lose fat, correct ? Don't worry about a little fluctuations of scales. If you gain muscle and lose fat at the sametime, you'll probably heavier on scale (muscle is more dense than fat). Besides your water & sodium intake alone can fluctuate your weight daily by 5lb or 2kg or so.

Slim fast is basically a skim milk with sugar & flavorings. It's hardly a quality protein. Buy a tub of protein & mix it yourself; it's better quality and cheaper than slim fast.

I am going to finish off my last cans of slim fast and try the protein shakes that you recommended (do they do meal bars also) I agree eating food is better, I do eat at weekends but because of my hours and timetable during the week it is easier for me to use meal replacements, once I get my weight down I will go back to eating during week as well as weekends.
I am going to do a weight lifting session on fridays (do i need to do some cardio before hand to warm the muscles?) can I also do it after my class so that I have two good weight lifting sessions? and start off at what? 3x 8 reps or something? thanks for all your help..

As I said before, I recommend max-ot program... but if you think it's too advanced, start with:

Bench press
Squats
Deadlifts

at least twice a week.

You can also split: Upper body -- Lowerbody -- Upper body, lift every other day.

Get a trainer if you are uncomfortable doing them by yourself.

it is not that it is too advanced because I did weight lifting before, and it doesnt interest me to do a Max-Ot program because I hate using weights, I love doing cardio, and weights is not something I want to take up or do hence why i just want to do the basics, I have been given a personal program by my personal trainer when i first started, a few reps on inner and outer thigh, lats, chest press and back. I used to lift weights years ago and yes I lowered my body fat, I was lean, i didn't drop that much weight due to being toned and muscles but the athetic look is not what I am aiming for, I was a certain weight before and I didn't need weight training to be that weight hence why I am not keen on weight training, it just does not interest me (I guess Bodybuilding isnt the right site for me to come on!) People keep saying do not go by numbers on the scales but I do because the number that i was that is what I want to be again, I am not a discplined, person who can follow CKD diets and so on, I am just a normal person who wants to eat what she wants in moderation and lose weigh through lowering calories and exercising to get back to what i was and then maintaining by ensuring I never eat as much as I did the year that I gained so much weight and by not doing exercise to keep the weight down! (in the past I ate what I wanted but always did three cardio sessions a week to maintain my weight). I am a lost cause (stubborn as well!)

Well, I don't know what to tell you. Lifting weights + some cardio + sendible diet is the only way I know to lose weight in healthy manner.

I guess you might want to try Atkins, or seriously consider liposuction.

I don't need liposuction, and liposuction doesn't change anyone's eating habits, as for atkins, that is not a healthy way to lose weight at all. I guess I am being misunderstood, people on weightwatchers for example lose weight because simply cutting calories means you will lose weight as many dieters on weightwatchers have done without exercising and so forth, someone who has lost say 2 stones just through dieting alone is not going to look overweight or look like they have a high body fat, cutting down on fat and eating a low calorie diet will reduce their weight and being as active as possible even if it is just walking everywhere, they will look like they have lost two stones, but I suppose what you are getting at is more focus on the body fat aspect as opposed to the numbers on the scales, I supposed I am not scientific and concerned with what my body fat is, I am the typical go by height, frame and ideal weight type of person, I just think if someone does not like weights why must they do three sessions of max ot ?, but for the past few years I have noticed that weighs seemed to be something that must be included in a fitness plan these days.........but like I said I will do weights on a friday (just friday for the moment ) and I will let you know if I am converted.....

and when they stop the weight watchers...they gain it all back.

You don't hav to bodybuild to lift weights...you can do light weight high reps to work your muscles...weightlifting does not mean bodybuilding.
you just gotta do whats right for you. your body will adjust to its activities and eating habits. So if you are not losing, you have to change something. Last time I changed something and went against what I thought was right....I lost 10 lbs of fat.

Well, I start my first weight lifting session tomorrow, I am going to hit the gym early, warm up on the rower and do my weights, I have also started taking Xenadrine EFX to give me a boost! so my routine will be:

Monday: Step aerobics with hand weights
Tuesday: Circuit training
Wednesday: Weight lifting session (warming up on rower or x machine)
Thursday: squash (can't get out of it because I play with my mum and she hasn't got a partner!)
friday: Weight lifting and running

is that ok?? Four days a week I will still stick to slim fast because I love it and three days a week I will eat lots of protein.
i will also use my gym ball five nights a week to tone my muscles and bum and so on and continue with my supplements.

I weigh myself on sunday to see if I broke through my weight loss plateau...wish me luck.......

lethalweapongal,

Your body's needs now are different from what they were even a few years ago. Your metabolism slows down as you age so the diet and exercise that maintained your weight before will not do it now. Not to mention people tend to become less active as they age (or simply switch from being an active student to a sedentary office worker, for example).

If you already know that all that's required is to eat less and be more active, do that!

The only other advice being proferred here is to increase your resting metabolic rate by increasing the percentage of your mass that's lean muscle. If you don't want to do that - then eat less and take more exercise. Unfortunately, there is no quick, magic formula.

I agree with your advice but I am more active now then what I was before when I lost weight, I worked in an office, I just went gym three times a week and ate a low fat diet and lost weight.
This time around I go gym five times a week, I am on a calorie restricted diet and my weight loss has been very slow, 22 lbs in 20 weeks ( 5 months) I hit a weight a weight loss plateau, so last week I started on supplements to help me through it and this week i will hit the weights to help shift it, I can't be anymore active, I think five days a week is enough, i cannot eat less, I eat up to 1,300 so if I am already doing what you have advised me to do and I am more active now then what i was before what else can I do? I am not naive as to believe I can sit and eat cakes and take pills to lose weight, nothing is easy it takes work, I just used to do weights before I didnt like so I was trying to avoid it but since my weight is not shifting I have no choice but to start lifting weights from tomorrow, then I am sure my weight will shift and I will come online and tell the doctor...yep, you were right , I was stubborn....

gal, you're still not totally listening.

First off, quit with the damn slimfast. far too many empty calories & carbs. I personally think your calorie intake is too low, but it's made up of empty, worthless calories, so you're not seeing the results you want. you should increase your protien intake, and make it quality protien. mix it up between whey, casien(milk), eggs, and fish[you said you're a partial veggie, so I left out meat]. The other thing you should do is bring up your carb intake as well, but make them complex carbs, such as oatmeal, or other types of whole grains. MRP's are an 'OK' way to go about changing your diet, as long as they are a quality MRP. Myoplex from EAS is one of the best out there, and from what I've heard, its' taste is quite good as well.

Bringing up the amount of Protien & quality carbs you take in will more than likely bring your total calorie count up as well.

the biggest thing you need to do is switch up your routine. your body DOES have a memory, and it becomes accustomed to what you do, if you repeat it enough times. even just switching what days you do certain things will have an effect. if you want it to be more drastic, switch what types of cardio you are doing, or put weight lifting in its place once in a while.

the best way to induce your body to continue to change the way you want it to, is to shock it. if your body isn't expecting something, it will not be prepared for it, and more than likely won't handle the process in the most effecient way possible, expending more calories.

that's just my .02, i wish you luck on your end goals, and hope i've not clouded your view any further

I am not on slim fast anymore, I used slim fast to boost my diet which it has done by helping me to lose 23lbs, I am now having veggie bacon or sausage in wheatgerm bread for breakfast, banana, apple, bio yoghurt, jacket potato with beans or cottage cheese or kedergee, or fish/rice, pitta bread/tuna and something extra to bring my calories up to 1,200-1,300. I did a weight training session on last and I will do a weight training session again this week, I am trying different things, I used the rower, and Some days I swap machines so I am listening...still only lost one pound though but hey....better then gaining two!

Have I have you your body weight can fluctuate easily everyday due to water retention/dehydration?

Have I told you you may gain weight if you lose fat and gain weight?

Yes, I have. Why do we bother....
