Default Avascular Necrosis

So last week I was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis, or Legg-Calve-Perkies disease. I'll save you the Google time and give you an incite to what it is.

"Somehow" the blood flow to my femurs was cut off, which leads to the dying of the bone. This could result in bone deformation, which means arthritis later in life, and more than likely having surgery at some point for it.

While this is an exteremly rare disease, it is even more rare to see it in both hips, which I have. My sports doc said that it normally occurs in young children, and he doesnt know why I would have it. Of course he assumed I was using steroids, which can cause it, but I'm not.

He told me that about 5-10% of American-made supplements have some type of anabolic agent in them, and about 30% from forgien countries contain them... interesting..

But in the mean time, I have an appointment with a surgeon the begining of next month, which means I can't do anything until I get his opinion. My doctor said that I more than likely wont be able to play football, which really sucks.

Has anyone here had, or know someone who had this? I just wanted to get some real advice on whats going on, and to see what resulted from having it.

My thoughts before seeing the surgeon is "If I have to get surgery, I might as well **** it up real bad (by playing football) before getting it done." It just really sucks becuase I've been lifting my ass off all year, getting up at 5am to get to school to lift, and its all going to waste now.

So anyone have any insite?
thanks

This might be of interest to you:

McQuade, Mary. Houghton, Kerry.

Institution The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Title Use of bisphosphonates in a case of Perthes disease.

Source Orthopaedic Nursing. 24(6):393-8, 2005 Nov-Dec.

Abstract Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs that have been used extensively for more than 10 years to treat adults with osteoporosis. Use of bisphosphonates in pediatrics has generally been confined to conditions such as osteogenesis imperfecta or other conditions with bone density problems. Bisphosphonates increase bone density, bone mineral content, and strength; improve mobility; reduce fracture rates; and are effective agents in combating bone pain. Bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclastic action, thereby increasing bone density (Rauch & Glorieux 2004). Recently there has been interest in the effect of bisphosphonates in localized disorders of bone, including avascular necrosis. The third-generation bisphosphonate zoledonic acid is currently being explored as a treatment for children presenting with Perthes disease at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, Australia, and this is a report of that experience.

Could be a possible non-surgical option...Has your doctor discussed any non-surgical options?

Thanks for the replies guys.. I really appretiate them.

Traz, thanks for the info man... my regular doc hasn't really discussed many treatment options with me, he pretty much just refered me to a pediatric surgon (I guess because he normally sees this in kids under 10, but he specializes in this) to figure out my options. Im curious to as how far along the disease is... my doc said that I easily could have had this for a year or longer, and they are just now finding it.

Either way im confident that the new doc I have to see will be able to tell me a little bit more on whats going on... I really wouldn't mind the surgery.. I just wanna play football lol..

Imagine not being able to squat or DL for the past 5 months... insanity is begining to set in lol

Anyway thanks for the input guys!
