I was too skinny to play rugby at school - I had a lot of Pacific Islanders at my school too and they were HUMUNGOUS - pretty daunting for a weedy white boy like me. Looking back now, I could easily have packed on the beef if I'd wanted to but I was more interested in getting wasted The All Blacks play South Africa this weekend - we are gunna cream them!! Check this & this out! |

Australia already HAMMERED South Africa. 49-0 and beat England too (twice)
Australia lost to NZ, but that was a game in NZ. NZ are very hard to beat at home. If you want a quicker and even better game (rougher in my opinion) play Rugby league. Those links are videos of rugby union. A fullback has to be very good on the high balls (catching) and are usually very quick. And are usually pretty good at putting in small chips and big clearing kicks in rugby union. You want to be atleast a good solid 78-85kg to be fullback, and if your tall maybe a solid 90kg Last edited by hmmm; 07-17-2006 at 09:14 PM. |

Someone I know plays professional rugby as well as at under 21 level (international). I asked him about this in a short convo and he gave me some tips and I also found some info from another forum. For a start, you'll need to design a program that's 'sports specific'.
This means: Train for Rugger! Examples: -Bodybuilding will help, but not greatly. -Training for long distance running will help, but not greatly. Rugby involves strength and endurance, so design a program based around those 2 training phases. Short sharp interval based CV training is a MUST, as it mirrors the on field dynamics of rugby. Exercises that involve using the rotational forces of your trunk (passing the ball, shrugging tackles etc). Grab a dumbell and mimic passing the ball and catching it. Increase the intensity as your body adapts! Doing Strength & Power training moves in order to withstand the knocks & tackles are a must. Squats, Deadlifts, Bench (compound movements) performed with heavy poundages for short sets with medium rest. Balance exercises to withstand the knocks & tackles is also must. Plyometric training, pne legged training, blind folded training will all help with Rugby

This last post summed it up good before i got a chance to dive in here.... I played rugby for 4 years in college, spanning the USA and some of europe, and i can pretty much tell you that body building will get you no where as far as rugby goes, much like any sport. You need to concentrate on a good strength/weight ratio, for example, being a jacked 200 pounds wont do **** for you if you can barely bench your body weight. Dont worry so much about putting on pounds, as much as keeping yourself strong- your core more than anything. As far as getting into shape cardio wise, do things like sprints, squat jumps, and other plyometric stuff. Rugby youll probably remember very quickly how well you carry your weight out there for 80 minutes,so dont get too heavy. I played wing at 6'0 197 for the past to years, compared to about 170 my freshman and sophomore years. While obviously the extra size, and extraodinary increase in strength (135 bench to around 285) helped me on the field, it took a LONG time to get used to lugging those extra muscles around, so make sure you do things to keep your agility and endurance up.

thanks for all the advice guys...after an ill-fated freshman year in pharmacy school, i find myself now at a community college, but after this year, i plan on going to UMASS and i would love to play there...i am focusing more on building strength(high reps, low weight) but whatever positive gains in size and looks, well i can deal with those
if rugby is a fall sport in college, it will be at least 13 months before i start playing but i want to start plyometrics training this week
