I am getting this terrible aching pain in my right forearm when I do curls of any sort. I THINK this started when I did reverse curls for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I talked to a few people and they said that it is just like shin splints but in the arm and that it will go away.
Well, my arm is getting worse. It gets so bad that sometimes I lose the ability to grip anything with my right hand. Sometimes I get shocks of pain all the way from my mid-forearm to my wrist. I can relate this pain to hitting your funny bone. Thanks for your help in advance. I am trying to mend this soon before it gets worse. For right now, I guess I will stop doing curls, which makes me very mad. Thanks for reading. |

Yep...get some Tums antacid tablets. They are loaded with Calcium. Chew 1 or 2 a day (with a healthy diet of course

Thanks for the input. I worked out my shoulders and back today and I was doing fine until I spotted my workout partner when doing shoulder press on a hammer machine. I didnt use much force at all to help him lift it but now it hurts to grip anything. I was holding my tray at lunch and almost dropped the food everywhere because of this. I am hopefully getting a Dr's appointment set up in the next couple days.
I will start taking it easier but I am not going to stop working out. I have came a long way since I started and I dont want to lose my hard earned gains. Also, I will start supplementing calcium as I dont drink very much milk. |

I had it in both my forearms it was like 6 months before it completely healed. It was very painfull anytime my palms were facing up and I had any weight in my hands. It also would hurt after doing curls, I had to slowly let go of the bar. Seriously, just go crazy light on curls. For example I would just do the bar on standing curls for a couple workouts, then I started adding 5 lbs (2 1/2 on each side) each subsequent workout.

TRAZ: I just started taking multi-vitamins about a week ago.
Traps: I have to let go of the bar slowly too or else it is very painful. So should I do lightweight curls even if it is hurting my arm? I am going to my doctor Friday to see what she says. I finally started getting stronger because I am on a more strict diet and I am working out consistently, and now my arm starts hurting. It sucks! I guess I will start going lighter. What do you think I should start at. Currently I am repping 35's for dumbell curls and around 85 lbs on preacher curls and standing barbell curls. Reps are anywhere from 6-10. |

I had a similar problem a few years ago, not only did my forearm hurt but, my arm from the elbow down would go knumb and it would shake on it's own followed with tingling sensation, go to a doctor, I waited a month before I could not stand the pain, It turn out I had a hairline fracture, some PT and ultrasound PT, they gave me some muscle relaxer's, and some pain med. But overall I was down for 3 weeks. I feel great know, and have been. So if you still have pain. Go to the doctor, just to be on the safe side.

/\ Yep that is probably the best idea...Laying off of your arms for three weeks won't kill you...Just really kill your legs!
Keep taking your vitamins and supplement a little Calcium and you should make a relatively quick recovery.

When it comes to you're health, and you're body you have to listen to it, when it tells you hey this hurts, don't try to ignore it, or say it's no big deal, play it out a couple of days, but if the problem persits break down and go to the Doc. Remember you wont to be able to lift you're kids or grand kids in you're latter days Duckett |

I really dont see a need to see a doctor, it sounds exactly like what I had, and alot of people get at some point during the 1st year of working out. No dont lift a weight that hurts, do like 5 lbs dumbells, if that hurts then use no weight at all, just stay in your routine. Each bicep workout increase the weight a little. If it hurts too bad, then you've increased too much. I had the pain for months until I started working out like I'm advising, then and only then did it start to get better.

Thanks for all the help guys. I go to see the doc. tomorrow. Even if she says to lay off of it for awhile, I will try and do what Traps said to do. Good thing is, I can still bench press without it hurting.

Well I went to the doctor today and got an x-ray. She found nothing, told me to do lightweight repititions and it should heal itself over time, then I went home. One of the most pointless doc appointments I've ever been to. DOes an x-ray even show a micro-fracture? I am guessing not since it would be so small. Today I did dumbell curls with 40's and it did not hurt one bit. I have found that it is the barbell and preacher curls that are straining it.

I have the exact same thing right now in both arms, but moreso in my left. I asked around, and it could be tendonitis; the muscles grow too strong for the tendons, so you have to ease off and let the tendons get stronger.

Well the good thing is that nothing is wrong!!! There's nothing wrong with having it checked out, at least you know that it's not some sort of a fracture. Good news Duckett. |

I've got the same thing bothering me. It really hurts when I flex my right bicep. I did hammer curls the other day and noticed I couldn't get the weight up with my right arm unless I flared the elbow way out. I probably got too heavy too fast. I will lay off bicep work for a few weeks. They will get some indirect work on back day. The elbow seems to be fine on tricep movements.
Glad to hear that it was nothing serious. Good for you, plus I feel much better about things. |

OK, I'm now one of the older guys. 45, trained for 25 years, used to train 7-days a week for 3 hours. Back then, that is what we thought made it work. Never knew about taking time to let the body grow...
Now my shoulders are hosed, but for some reason, my knees survived 520lb deep squats (and I'm 6'3" and 210lbs). Whatever. What is now killing me is very bad pain in my left forearm. It seems like the tendon that comes out under the bicep and connects to the forearm, and the pain seems to be where the tendon attaches to the forearm. Any standard curls, reverse curls, or hammers hurt so much I can hardly do them Do you guys think this is tendinitis? It is really pissing me off. I've had MRIs on the shoulders, and I know the problems there. Maybe I need one for the forearm? My trainer seems puzzled and he knows his stuff. From what you guys are saying, this does not seem like micro fractures. I am not going super heavy anymore - probably 45lb dumbells max. Hurts whether I use a straight bar of curl bar as well. Any help for an Old guy is appreciated. |
