I'm 17 and have been lifting for a little less than 3 years. My diet consist of egg whites in the morning, chicken or turkey on wheat for lunch, lean meats or fish for dinner, and yogurt as a snack in between. I take Designer whey after I work out and was wondering if i should take creatine.
I looked into it and for the most part it seems safe. If their are any risks involved of taken it at my age i don't want to use it. If it is safe to take then i figure it will help me both physically and mentally. If i can take it what brand should i buy and in what amounts should i take it in. Also what should i eat before workouts. I have a whey after i workout, should i switch it to before. |

I'd like to commend you on being such a responsible sounding guy at 17. Eating properly and doing good research on things you put in your body. Bravo!
As far as creatine goes at your age, its a mixed bag. With your responsibility level, I think it would be fine. You have to drink tons of water which takes some will-power. 4-6 liters is where you want to be aiming while on creatine to protect your kidneys. A lot of my friends in highschool neglected this and would get nightmare cramps. If you feel like you can keep up with the water intake, go for it. Last edited by Gill; 02-13-2008 at 10:14 AM. No, it causes blindness and hairy palms. Oh wait, thats something else.
As mentioned - I'd wait. Keep eating right, get enough sleep and workout hard. You'll grow plenty without the creatine.

Thanks for the info. You guys were fast, helpful, and friendly compared to other forums. I was leaning towards not taking it, unless it was as harmless as whey. Either way, I'm going to wait till I'm close to 19 before i consider taking it.

You are at such a prime age to grow. IMO just stick with lifting hard, eating tons (clean foods like you have) and sleeping lots. Your body at 17 years old and for years to come will be raging to grow, take advantage of it.
Stick with the whey, maybe a multivitamin, and save the creatine for when you plateau in your strength in a few years. |

i wouldnt worry about the side effects.. maybe skip the loading phase your first cycle and stick with 5 grams a day (about a tea spoon) with dextrose or apple/grape juice. my room mate just started working out and picked up some creatine and tried loading it and got the s**ts pretty bad. like the other guys mentioned; drink at least a gallon of water a day.

You can take it, you'll be fine....as in my opinion though, Id wait. Wait until you've reached a natural plateau awhile down the road, then bust out a good solid creatine cycle. Me personally, I've done 2 cycles, didnt care for em at all. Rather just load up on Whey and Dextrose PWO.
