Default Gym at home good investment?

Hey,
I'm 15 and started weight lifting about 5 weeks ago. I'm really into it and i go to the gym about 3 times a week. I mostly do arm exercises and upper body workouts. I was thinking about buying a barbell and dumbell set along with a bench, But would it end up saving me money? Gym membership is about 300 a year.. I'm not sure how much what i want is. I don't think this is just a faze either, I really enjoy it.
So is it a good idea?
P.S: I'd also like to know how much a barbell, dumbell and bench set would be at a local Target or sports shop, Thanks.

i bought one when i was 15 too..bench, lat pull down, leg ext\curl...and i bought a curl bar..with the weights it was about 1000 bucks..the problem was i didnt have a squat rack, and some other equipment so i got tired of it and got a gym membership lol...my suggestion is if u get a home gym, dont cheap out and just get a bench and curl bar...go the whole 9 yards...get urself a squat rack, a bench, curl bar, a preacher curl seat etc.

If I were in your position, I would not buy equipment if I had a gym to go to. I wouldn't and that is because gyms give you nearly a limitless amount of exercises to work with (alot of machines). Home equipment on the other hand, usually gives you fewer options unless you plan on going all out and getting alot of machines. On top of that, home gyms take up alot of space and cost alot. Maybe 10 years down the road, a home gym would be pay itself off over the gym, but who's to say if you'll want to continue lifting for 10 years? IMO, a public gym is better than a home gym for most reasons.

I bought a home gym and used it for the whole summer, then started going to the gym. In my opinion go the gym the equipment is much better than anything you will be able to buy and the atmosphere is much more motivating

I personally train at home. I grunt and make all kinds of weird sounds while lifitng so I like doing it in the privacy of my house.

No putting up with lame gym people that are rude, ignorant and arrogant. No listening to horrid gym music as I train with Pantera or Slipknot and I train with the music loud.

More importantly, no expensive gym fee's and no driving anywhere to workout. It's nice to workout and take a shower in your own shower and not having to set aside 10-15-30 minutes to a hour to just drive to the gym.

I believe it's well worth the investment. However getting someone to spot for you is hard, luckly I have a roomate that is into training.

Go for it. Home gyms are great if you don't have time to always go to the gym.

Thanks heaps for your input guys
I'll be definately looking into getting one if the right dollar amount comes along (I live in Aus). My friend even mentioned a bench set he saw from a shop for around $130. However, I completely agree with one your statements that the gym atmosphere is great.
Like i said, Until the right price comes along, I'll be sticking to the local gym.

I have a power rack in my basement and starting in the summer will workout at my house and agree it'll be a lot better=your choice of music, protein drink immediatley after(though possible at gym),shower at home, and act crazy if needed.

My Power rack is similar to this; with a thick 45lb silver olympic bar though i'd prefer a thinner 45lb bar but don't got the money. Also I have a bench and couple set of Db's to go along.

If your 15 and ur just starting I would say atleast use a gym membership for a year. Look around see how people do certain exercises. Learn good form, learn new exercises. Its always good to meet new people too and you wont be able to afford 1/23489723894732 of the things you need with 300$.
