Abs are like every other muscle that you work out and should be trained the same way you train other muscles. That being said, I hit my abs once a week in the gym. 4 sets of 25 reps weighted decline sit ups, or cable crunches, or the "ab machine", and add in the same amount of sets/reps of leg lifts. I train in Taekwondo too so I get my ab work there as well. You have to allow your muscles to rest in order for them to grow. Abs and calves are no different.
