I am 13. I have been doing weight training for a few months. However, not so long ago I started getting worried that weight training can be bad for people of my age. Some people say that is bad for hight, I have heard both personal stories and read it on good (reliable) sites. I have also heard the opposite from both types of sources.
So what's the truth? |

Ya, I remeber always being told growing up that weight lfiting is bad while your young, its just a myth some use to scare kids away from weights so that they dont injure themselves, which should be your only concern on the subject.
I wish I started earleir aswell, keep it up!! And I will blame my short stalkyness on it too, but it was more likly drugs/alcohol/tobacco/coffee/genetics, which you should stay clear of, except for the genetics part, go ahead and let that happen.

Coffee does stain your teeth yellow, give some caffiene sensitive people the shakes, and also contains many beneficial antioxidants. I have been drinking coffee since I was 5, and have been drinking it regularly for 5-6 years. At age 19 I'm 6'2" - 6'3". It is merely just another one of those myths about stunting growth. I have recently stopped drinking it as often because green tea is even better for you. |

Snowboardist, its good to hear your weight training, its a good habbit to start while young, it will help you stay healthy, along with a good diet. Keep up the good work!
Rolf, I was just joking around with that whole bit about me being short, I dont drink coffee either, I am caffeine sensitive, I tend to pass out. I used to drink it all day every day, cant no more. And genetics made me short no biggie.

lol Yeah, I am, and yes, you did. P.S. This is not the first site that I have been mistaken for a guy on. And not the first time on this site, either (not that I really mind). So I guess it's because of how I write or something. Last edited by Snowboardist; 06-26-2006 at 08:33 PM. |

Is military press same thing as shoulder press? |

Yup, there is just two way you could do it when your older, behind the head, and infront.
Although, couldnt this create a shoulder imbalance if she didnt train military, and only bench press? Is there another lift she could do instead to make up for this? If it is hard on the spine. I would think it would be alright if you didnt push yourself to hard on this exerice, but I'm not positive...

doing it behind your head isnt as bad as doing it infront, when you do it infront, your back naturally bends back as you push forward, causing a lot of straight on your lower spine.
When you do it behind your head, your back is pretty straight. If you're sitting with a good posture as you do this, I dont think there will be much of a problem. |

Although, you should be carefull, and read up on form for behind the head presses as they can be determential to your neck.

Then again, you could always have one too, if you are like steel girl. :It shouldn't be a problem if you have good form, just like everyone else says.
