Default Too much

After too much cardio, does it eventually break down muscle?(in a bad way)

I think that 30-45 minutes i plenty.

depends if you are training for a specific sport or not. are you?

Too much cardio can put your body into an atrophic/catabolic progression(muscle degradation). But it is pretty hard to do this. ive only ever heard of anorexic(sp)/bulemic people do this to themselves.

good question.

see , what happens is your body will use fat reserves first to supply the energy. If you run out of it, your body goes to the muscles to break them down for energy. You dont want your body using muscle cells to supply energy. you want the muscle to use the supplied energy from fats.

For the sport, nothing really, just a general question. I was just concerned after too much runnning on a daily bases like 1 hour of cardio. Im not doing that, but just had a question.
Thanks for the info, good stuff.

running an hour a day is probably fine. I used to run 6 miles a day for x-country. tooke me about an hour. just so long as yo are keeping hydrated and are getting extra calories. It's when you get into like 2 hrs on a treadmill, or something that is dangerous to your health.

it prolly wont break down muscle if you have the right diet but it sure makes it hard to build so i wouldnt do tii much if you're trying to build.

I was told by someone that if you do Cardio (bike, treadmill) after a weight based work-out then you will break down all the muscle that you have just been building (while working-out). Is this true? If so when is the best time to do Cardio, before? Or as part of a completly different gym session?

Thanks in advance.

Doing cardio before a weight training session would no doubt tire you out for the workout session and you may not have energy, or as much energy as you would have in the beginning to complete your work. This way, you wouldn't be able to go as heavy.

I do cardio on a separate day. I think it's best to do it that way so it wouldn't interfere with any anabolic activity.

ignore the advice above. Most of it is incorrect (not all).

Your body is always breaking down muscle and recycling it. This usually happens in a certain stage of sleeping. Its safe to do cardio if you give your body the fuel to do this-- carbohydrates. If you lack the carbohydrates you body will move to fat stores, however you body will start breaking down muscle and using it for energy as well.(at the same time). This is due to the stress that your body is going through while doing cardio-- when your body is stressed your body produces higher levels of cortisol then usual. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone. Its unwanted at high levels because of its catabolic nature but is needed to survive.

People should not be afraid of cardio for its catabolic nature, its a myth. The only problem with you will have with cardio is that you may burn your calories needed for muscle building. However this will not be a problem if your diet takes into account the calories your burning in cardio.

You should be more worried about weightlifting then cardio. Weightlifting is much more catabolic then cardio. Weightlifting is one of the most catabolic activities.

I dont think it works that way. When you work out, you break down your muscles. You build them while you rest, like when youre asleep, which is why rest is so important when you want to gain muscle. You doint build anything while working out, the building comes when youre out of the gym. There are no gains right after you lift, so therefore cardio cannot break down your gains since you have yet to gain anything.

Cardio can break down muscle, if you do too much and/or dont get enough protein to sustain your muscle gaining goals. It will hinder you if youre trying to put on mass, but it shouldnt reduce your muslce if you have the right diet.
