A litt background: 3 police officers were killed last week by some dip**** that went on a rampage cuz the dog pissed on the rug. Apparently he was disappointed because he on got 3 and thought he got 4, but that's beside the point in this case.
So on thursday we had a memorial service for them in Pittsburgh here. Police from all over Northeast came and attended. There was somewhere around 25,000 police officers (the building where I work overlooks a portion of the freeway and the procession of police cars took 1 hour and 45 minutes to go past with little traffic) attending. The problem was, the service was in Oakland, right next to the University of Pittsburgh. This put it right in the center of two of the busiest streets in the city. Now, come 5 o'clock, the service is ended and the officers are getting ready to leave. It also happens to be the time I'm going home. In order for all these police officers to leave, they blocked traffic into and through Oakland for an hour and a half. Now us Pittsburgh'ers aren't exactly known for our patience and I was ready to hear people yelling and beeping and the whole she-bang. BUT, not once during the hour and a half of sitting in traffic waiting for the officers to leave did I hear a single person beep or yell. Even looking around, I didn't see an angry face in any of the other cars. One lady was crying, people on busses simply got out and walked. It was... odd but somehow comforting.
Then came Friday, and all my hope for the redemption of humanity came crashing down. Really, I had to stop and read this again, then check the date of the article to make sure it's not an April Fool's joke of some sort. Go ahead and read it
Here.
This just blow's me away. I mean, I understand if some pack of morons wants to go spend a month on an island for a chance at a Mil, or some sorority girl in a push-up bra wants to eat a bowl of writhing cockroaches for her 15 minutes of fame, but that's because it's all voluntary. There's some reason for these people to play their game and THEY SIGNED UP FOR IT. When I got my job, I didn't do so to get on a reality TV show and have to fight for it. That's ridiculous. Can you imagine the potential for workplace violence? Everything is fine and dandy until someone finds out their "best bud" said they should be laid off. Oh, they'll just take it in stride and say "Ha! It's just a game." Except it's ****ing not. It's not a game anymore when you're talking about taking food out of a family's mouth for ****s and giggles.
Sorry but what's next? If this seems like a good idea, I'm guessing "Survivor: Christians vs. Lions" won't be far behind.
I just had to post this because.. it seemed like such a contrast and I felt like venting. All done now.
