I can get a job over in Iraq in a safe zone for a VERY LARGE sum of money for 1 year. With overtime, it could almost be 4X my currently salary.

I know several people that have been in the same area (actually the same camp Boyd was stationed at) and they claim it is very safe and no where near any danger........of course that stuff is taken with a grain of salt.

At this point, I am really not even considering it just because of the fear of danger and I have a family, so.........

Discuss.
No discussion. Do it. I've never regretted one second of it. Money isn't everything but the security that type of money provides is invaluable. Plus it liberates you to do whatever the hell you want. I've decided to use my money for evil, befriend Hank and party every night of the week while I have a business that keeps me fed, housed (and keeps me driving expensive cars and boats).

If I had to do it all over again, I would've done it exactly the same. My advice? DO NOT TAKE A MIDTOUR LEAVE. Stay there. If you don't stop, you never have to restart. Get over there, do your time and get back.

Camp Victory is a piece of cake. I flew around the country on a blackhawk the entire time and I was never really in danger. The sensationalistic press makes it WAY worse than it really is.

Oh, and the people that tell you not to do it PROBABLY have never been presented with a job offer of more than $350-500k for one year. You know my situation - I had a very young child that I love more than life when I left and while that was hard, he'll never have to want for anything and his college is totally paid for if he needs it.

Go.

On this topic - I just got emailed a job in the middle east - undisclosed location as a security advisor. I'd have to retire - like now.....but its nearly 200K for 1 year.

Probably not quite enough cash......but something I'm going to look further into to find out EXACT details before saying no.

Look at the difference of what you'd make in the civilian world and then think about how much longer you'd have to work to make that money on your retirement. I get a big ass check from the VA anyway, so there is NO way I could've justified staying on active duty for 10 more years to get that retirement when I made a lifetime of retirement pay over there (and I'm not considering that VA check I get).
