Ok, my gf talked me into downloading the freedom security software that comes with my internet provider. Its free and seems pretty good. My subscription to Mcafee ran out and it was'nt the best anyway, so I went with freedom. Now the problem: I had a heck of a time uninstalling all of the Mcafee and there may be some hidden somewhere because when I start my computer and error box comes up and says something like "error code 7.1.001 reinstal Mcafee privacy service". When I close that a error box comes up "failed to initialize because of 51201 proxy component, use windows diagnostic utility to fix. Well, I'm no computer wiz. I think I used the diagnostic utility, but it did'nt help. I called freedom the other day and they told me to call Mcafee to find out how to eliminate all their stuff on my computer. I can't find any of their files on the computer now and I don't have their number anymore anyway. I do have the Mcafee disk. Should I reinstal it? Freedom does'nt work with another security software installed. My gf tried to fix it, but to no avail. I'm not sure what to do now. Should I call a computer place and have them look at at? I can't really afford it right now and it still works after I close the boxes and start freedom, but its getting anoying...

try this
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore Choose a restore point when Mcafee was working. then after the system is restored...... Start-Run-MSCONFIG On the general tab click selective startup. Below selective startup, uncheck(clear out) the box next to load startup items.....restart and try to uninstall mcafee again

Did you do the uninstall yourself or did you do it from the uninstall program or add/remove software?
Part of your computer is looking for mcafee, so the uninstall was complete. Worst case, uninstall freedom (Mcafee HATES sharing security duties with other software, it will lock your computer) reinstall mcafee, and then uninstall it and reinstall your own software.

It should. I have never had any problems with Norton. If you bring up Norton Internet Security or Antivirus, you should have an option to uninstall there.

Yes, or you can open it from your service tray on your taskbar. Do you have it as a desktop icon as well, you can open it from there.

its because its installed in the registry. it must be removed from the registry, and you need to download a program to do this, because a novice fooling around in the registry equals bad news. google it, you should find something. add/remove programs wont completely remove it

Ok, I re-installed what I could of Mcafee, so that got rid of one error box. but I still have the other "proxy component failed to initialize". I bet when I called Freedom, she had me remove something. Now I can't figure out where I found their number or how to get ahold of mcafee without being charged...

Traps, I figured there was a place in the menu when you open the program to remove it. If not, try reinstalling it with the disk. Do not go messing with the registry. That could spell bad news if you mess something up. You shouldnt have to uninstall it from the registry anyways.

You know when you try to reinstall a program sometimes it will prompt you to modify/repair/remove if its already installed? Im gonna try reinstalling sometime. I'm just lazy and havent done it yet.

I would try that route first. Messing with the registry can be a bad thing unless you are sure of what you are doing.
