Lol at PJ...
I had a friend at the gym who was a heavy smoker (you could tell by his teeth especially) but for the sake of his gains, gave up smoking and instead chewed those nicotine gums to curb his craving.

If he has been smoking that long, he may look healthy on the outside and be in real good shape, but I can only imagine what its doing to his lungs.
I think it probably wouldn't hurt you for bodybuilding, but there is no way it could help for any aerobic sport. I have a friend who smokes an insane amout, and he does powerlifting, and is real strong, it doesn't take anything away from his lifts, but he can't run more than a few feet before losing his breath. He has been smoking for the last ~10 years. |

bro.....if he is that "big and cut" then he juices. you can be big n' fat or small n' cut.....but if your both big n' cut.....juice baby.
about the smoking....it has little to do with actual muscle growth.....as far as his internals, that might be another issue |

Funny you should mention that. The biggest, most ripped guy at one of the prisons I used to work at was a smoker. The guy was as big and almost as ripped as any 70's era Olympia competitor. His post-workout was a cig and a soda. I doubt it helped him, but it made me wonder. I'm sure it can't be good for your heart to do that. I've never seen it other than that 1 person though. The Mentzer brothers smoked too didn't they? (they are both dead now BTW-died 2 or 3 days apart I think)

Smoking doesn't effect muscle growth directly.. but it does effect your aerobic ability, which will effect how effeciently your muscles are able to recover between reps, sets and on rest days.
Basically if you took identicle twins that did the identical workouts and ate identical foods ect ect ect... The one the didn't smoke would have more oxygen in his blood, which in turn would better feed his body, and allow him to lift a bit heavier and a bit longer... he would probably have alot more endurance aswell. Oh and live on average of 5-10 years longer. as opposed to the smoker, who would have less oxygen in his blood (darker blood).. thicker blood.. potentially higher blood pressure.. tire quicker, and well.. generally die younger.. but yes you can still get big.

When my husband was in the army, before big runs everyone would take a few aspirin and even nonsmokers would smoke a cigarette. For some reason they all thought the smoking helped them with endurance....I can see why the aspirin, but the cigarette thing is odd. He told me that the best runners in his unit were serious smokers. Weird.

my best friend is a 2 pack a day smoker and he has never lifted weights...he has crones disease so alot of the protien supplements might bother him...but anyways I noticed the the size of his bicep, and for never lifting weights hes got a good physical profile....he eats alot of poultry and beef (ecspecially deer meat ) ...takes a multi and of course his ten different pills for his crones.he has very broad shoulders and is about 6'1. I tell him to drop the smoking and hit the iorn...but he said he feels good about his physical self and I agree and support him...We have been friends for 25 years...and because of the crones Ive almost lost him 3 times...hes like a brother to me and mabey someday I can get him off the lung darts!!LOL
