When people stop smoking, they usually put on weight. Although this is often a cause for concern, the average weight gain is around 2 to 3 kg although this may be temporary. Although the reasons for weight gain are not fully understood, it may be partly explained by the fact that smoking increases the body's metabolic rate – i.e. the rate at which calories are burned up. In addition, nicotine may act as an appetite suppressant so that when smokers quit an increase in appetite leads to an increase in calorie intake. The effect of nicotine on metabolic rate may also explain why smokers tend to weigh less than non-smokers. Experts believe that one way smoking raises metabolic rate is by stimulating the nervous system to produce catecholamines – hormones which cause the heart to beat faster, thus making the body burn more calories. Nicotine also produces more thermogenesis, the process by which the body produces heat. This too, causes the body to use up more calories.

However, a smoking-induced increase in metabolic rate only accounts for about half the difference in weight between the average smoker and average non-smoker. Another likely mechanism is that smoking alters the body-weight set point, i.e. the weight towards which a person tends to return despite attempts to gain or lose weight. Smoking appears to lower a person’s normal weight and the weight gained on stopping reflects a return to the body’s natural weight set point.

People often replace cigarettes with food to satisfy their need to be putting something in their mouth to keep their minds off of smoking especially right after quitting...Increased caloric intake results in weight gain. Another theory is that the dopamine satisfaction response that a person gets from smoking a cig is also partially induced by food. Basically people try to find a substitute for the satisfaction they get from smoking...And commonly that means eating more.

Well congradulations on you sustained fitness....but the comment "smoking effect nothin" is just plain wrong. Its cool that you are still ok, and there are always exceptions to all rules, but most of the time, someone who smokes will be in worse shape cardiovascularly than before they started smoking. Also, no matter how much you can still run and stuff, that doesnt negate the fact that you are saturating your lungs with smoke...im just saying, it does effect alot of things.

Well there is a difference between cigars and cigarettes, mainly the fact that you dont inhale cigars.

Were you referring to you smoking cigars or cigarettes. Because I smoke a cigar every now and then, maybe once a month, rarely maybe even twice, but if someone asks me if i smoke, i always reply no.

wow, i'll go buy a pack now if the great ahnold did it

Smoking is bad full stop, there are no good things to come from it. I gave up in september and just recently i have been slipping off the wagon a few times but i know full well that there is nothing but bad side effects to it.

if the great ahnold used his dick as a pogo stick would you also do the same? Smoking of any kind greatly increases the chances of cancer... end of

Well they are idiots then. I don't know a single cigar smoker who knows his **** about them and doesn't smoke white owl crap, that inhales. These are guys who have been smoking cigars for 20 plus years too. You don't know how to enjoy a cigar if you inhale it.

I graduated an "academy", about 7 months ago...in my academy was this 35year old guy who used to sneak cigs into his room. Its crazy I barely ran the 1.5 mile in 11:20, he ran it in 9:00 flat. I know smoking effects you on the inside (I used to smoke a LLLOONNGG time ago), I wonder how long it stays with you?

I smoke during leandown cause i find i get insane hunger and cravings, it only helps with that. Why i still smoke i dont know, i just think its because i gave up alcohol, and i still fight the urge to have a drink every now and then, so id rather have a smoke instead and im much happier. I dont smoke that much, just a couple a day, but mainly its to help my cravings

You'd be better off replacing that one cigarette with a nice glass of fine wine.

Wine is nice. Actually, it is alot like cigars in alot of ways. They are both aquired tastes that have various levels of quality and flavors. Distinguished palates are also also a plus with both.

I like a glass of wine here and there, but not for getting drunk. Wine hangovers are the worst and honestly getting "sh!tty" on fine wine is pretty much blasphemy IMO...
