Default R.I.P. Jesse Marunde

Jesse Marunde HAS DIED. He was so young, this is very tragic and I feel awful for his family as he was expecting a child with his wife or they just had a baby.

Here's a link that works

Powerlifting Watch | ~ Keeping an Eye on the Powerlifting Scene ~

But I'll post up what it says just in case

Top American Strongman competitor Jesse Marunde died last night from an apparent heart attack. He was 28 years of age. Reports indicate Marunde had just completed a set of high rep squats when he was stricken. Gigi Marunde says that a statement will be released

I feel sick and confused over this event, loved watching Jesse do his stuff every year at WSM.

Wow. That's so sad. He was a real force. Was it 2005 when he finished 2nd in the WSM? He had a bright future.

Same age as Jon Pall Sigmarsson when he had a heart attack and passed away. I think OD Wilson died at a young age too (29?) The elite strongmen take it to such an extreme that I guess sometimes it's too much for their bodies too handle.

I dont think his death has to do with lifting heavy weights.
I also hate to assume things either out of respect for his family, but I cant help but think he either had a heart condition OR the obvious other assumption (over use of roids or testosterone, etc)

I certainly don't think anyone should worry that LIFTING HEAVY = HEART ATTACK. There could be (and probably are) a bunch of factors involved, including family history of heart disease, diet, high blood pressure and so on. But if all those things are in place, heavy physical exertion can sometimes trigger heart attacks or arythmias. Was he actually working out when it happened?

I heard it happened shortly after doing his high reps on squats, much like here YouTube - Jesse Marunde 407x20 Squats

Poetic. He was an iron enthusiast who died during hardcore lifting. Like a soldier in battle. Good for him, he earned a spot in weightlifter heaven!

Sigmarsson went after doing deads - his favorite exercise.

passing of a friend

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friends, we suffered a great loss in the strongman community last evening. The Sequim Crew was doing what they do. Training hard and particularly training Jesse for the WSM contest in Anaheim. He died quickly and painlessly.

The squat set was as follows:
230kg x 8
190kg x 8
150kg x 8
110kg x 8
70kg x 8
Followed immediately by:
600# tire flip
265# stone load
All of this was done with no rest between sets. Rack, pull, go
At the completion of these sets Jesse laid on his back, on the cold floor like normal. Breck and Sarge noticed that his breathing was laborious. Jesse became incoherent and stopped breathing. We administered cpr, called 911 and continued to resusitate until paramedics arrived. They set up the defibrillator, epinephrin, to no avail. He was worked on for over an hour between Breck, Sarge and the paramedics.

These are the facts as it happened. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We appreciate your support and prayers.

The Sequim Crew
