Default Time to dust this off...

Well...I guess I can dust this journal off and update things a bit:
Back in January I started a new treatment protocol for my fibromyalgia. It left me pretty off kilter, borderline sick and in a lot of pain. So my training ended up being very light and minimal through January and February. I was not very happy about that.

I wasn't feeling very swift throughout February and my lungs were a disaster by the end of the month. Broke down and went to the doc. I had a really nasty case of bronchitis. I needed a heavy duty course of anti-biotics throughout most of the month of March. So there went another month of training down the tubes.

In April I flew out to Illinois to be with my middle son and his family as they settled into their new house. (My son has a new base assignment.) So I finally returned to my lifting and cardio...albeit very light.

Arrived home around the 3rd of May and training is on! And that means, my lifting, cardio and backpacking is in full swing.

Anyhow...I have been rather irritated with the scale. Last summer I had gotten to within 4 pounds of my target weight. (140) Never did check my measurements at that point though.

In the meantime my weight has crept back up and been around 155 which has been ticking me off. But! Gypsy and Kat keep telling me that I'm much leaner than I was last year and my clothes are fitting much differently and the mirror seems to be telling me I'm leaner too.

So yesterday in a fit of temper I took my measurements again and...
Weight Jan 1, 2006 - 150
Weight June 9, 2007 - 156

Forearms
01-06 9in
06-07 10.25in

Biceps
01-06 11in
06-07 12.25in

Shoulders
01-06 43in
06-07 45.75in

Chest has stayed the same at:
39in (above the breast)
36in (below the breast)

Waist has stayed the same at:
30 inches

Hip/glute
01-06 36in
06-07 37in

Thigh
01-06 21in
06-07 22in

Knee
01-06 14in
06-07 15in

Calves
01-06 13.50in
06-07 14.25in

I am very pleased to say the least. I don't think that is too shabby for a woman that lost 4 years of training to 3 surgeries and lyme disease. I was 7 years out from the first surgery in February of this year and this year marks my fifth year back to lifting and my fourth year back to hiking/backpacking.

So...a 'normal' week for me is:
Hiking - two days
Lifting - two days
Cardio - three days

Diet: Carb cycling is a must this time of year for me!

Anyhow...welcome back to Hawk's world. Things are always moving and shaking here...and some really big challenges and changes are coming up for me in August.

BTW...a pic of me looking out to Connecticut from Race Mountain Friday:

Thank you Ron! Nice to see you back as well. That trail was so gorgeous that Gypsy and I didn't want to return home Friday!

Today's cardio: 30 minutes - heavy bag work
*No kick work today. Wanted to 'save' my legs.

Amazing scenery in that pic, Hawkwind.

Best of luck to you with those "new challenges" you cited that are down the road for you and great work done so far.

Thank you HT. It was worth the hike to have such a view.

Since my hike for today was canceled (My buddy Kat is not feeling well.) I did my 'light' Sunday r-deads...

Romanian dead lifts
3 sets/12 reps - 55#

Low carb day today:
Cals: 1,342
Fat(g): 37
Carbs(g): 92
Protein(g): 166

Diet note:
On what I consider 'normal' days I have recently adjusted my macros to 20/40/40.
I have been trying to keep my fat at the 20% mark on the low carb days as well. I tend to 'worry' more about getting enough of the good fats in on those days as I've discovered that I will start to crave Natty PB if I'm not getting enough fats in my diet.

I did not quite make my protein goal today. I missed a meal and I'm not sure I really want to make it up. It will depend on if the 'hungries' hit me later or not.

Cardio: 30 minutes - heavy bag work/kick boxing
*Brought the legs back in to 'play' today and the right knee tolerated the work fine. So I should be good tomorrow for my squats. *whew*

Diet note...today is supposed to be a medium carb day for me...I'm not hungry! Normally I'm ravenous after a low day... Leaves me grumpy because it means I have to make myself eat...I hate when that happens because nothing 'tastes' good to me.

Monday's intake:
Cals: 1,691
Fat(g): 50
Carbs(g): 169
Protein(g): 153

*Dayum...I overshot my fat goal a bit. Carbs are okay for today...Protein is a bit lower than I would have liked.
26/37/36 Eh...after logging it all in I can see where I went wrong on my fats....have to adjust my diet a bit on Mondays.

Default Tuesday

So...first thing this morning the 'twinge' is back in my right knee That made me a very unhappy camper. I had decided that if the knee twinged or acted up I would pass up my 2 sets of 20 rep squats for the leg press as much as I hate it. Turns out that if my knee hadn't twinged I wouldn't have gotten near the squat rack today anyhow.

I have got to figure out a time when the place is not packed...I got to thinking, what did I do last year at this time? I basically 'came home' and went ultra-light on legs until the highschool and college kids returned to school in August and September. Now I'm really irritated as I may only have until August to go heavy on my legs...after that I may not be able to keep my gym membership...and I'll be lucky if I even have a place to train...

Gypsy's hubby wouldn't stick to training...so she bought him the BowFlex he wanted and she disassembled her squat rack since she couldn't fit both in the room she uses as her gym...otherwise I would have made arrangements to train at her place...can you say stressed??? Training is the one constant in my life these days and having my routine messed with just irritates me unmercifully.

Anyhow...enough biotching from me...

Lower body
Week 7 - Day 1

Leg press
set 1/12r - 190#
set 2/8 r - 200#
set 3/8 r - 200#
*Wore my brace...knee held up fine...but wholey hellz my butt hurts now!

Hip Adduction
set 1/12r - 140#
set 2/12r - 145#

Hip Abduction
set 1/12r - 140#
set 2/12r - 145#
*Nice steady increases over the past couple of weeks.

Calf machine
2s/15r -100#
*Once again went very light with these to save my calves for my hikes.

Machine back extensions
2s/12r - 130#

Machine abs
2s/15r - 50#
*Eh! I hate working abs...

Tuesday's totals and diet musings:
Cals: 1,802
Fat(g): 44
Carbs(g): 200
Protein(g): 163
22/39/36
*I'm having trouble eating enough protein throughout the day to meet my macro goals. I think I'm going to double up either my AM or my PM protein. My new PM casein came in while I was at work yesterday! I hope to hellz it's better than the last one I bought! I don't think I'm even going to bother finishing the very last of it...I'm not usually picky but dayum...that last batch was downright bland and tough to mix!

I decided to break up my AM cardio a bit since today is a 'no' carb day.
Cardio 1: 10 minutes - elliptical
Cardio 2: 10 minutes - heavy bag and kick work.
*I braced the knee and it biotched a couple times. Knocked the shins a bit hard a couple times ... at least I didn't clip my chin this time!
Cardio 3: 10 minute powerwalk before Kat and Ray left for work. The freakin' temps dropped down into the 50's and it started to rain.

Diet musings:
I think I finally have figured out decent meal choices for my 'no' carb day. I made it through all 6 meals and actually had to talk myself into my PM shake. The last couple of weeks I was going crazy from that 'hungry' feeling on my 'no/low' days if I let too much time elapse between meals. The new casein is much better...for this I am grateful! The only thing I hate about 'no/low' carb days are how tired I get by the end of the day. I couldn't wait to get home to my bed for some zzzzzzz's last tonight...

Wednesday's totals:
Cals: 1,343
Fat(g): 46
Carbs(g): 39
Protein(g): 186
31/10/57
*So I tried something a little different. I purposefully chose one higher fat protein source and had that earlier in the day. That seemed to help quite a bit to stave off that 'hungry' feeling for the most part. I ended up splitting some of my veggie servings with Ams...she loves fresh veggies and fruits and her mom was out of them. At first I worried cutting my veggie portion down would leave me hungry...but that didn't happen. At one point towards the end of the afternoon I felt myself go a bit lightheaded and that probably had a lot to do with my caffeine intake...it didn't last long thankfully.

*Today was my 'high' day...missed two meals. I was up early to make a run to the CT/NY border and back. (No hike due to that run border to border run. )Was up 'til late Thursday night as I had to run to NoHo and back and then run errands with Kat.

I got home and crashed...ended up sleeping the rest of the day. So I'm not even going to try and make up those two missed meals.

Caution! Rant ahead!
So what is it? Murphy's law or something? I need to move a ton of boxes and it's now pouring and storming.

And what is it with family anyhow?
"So Amy...did you know we are having a family picnic on the fourth?"
-Ummm....no! It would be nice if you folks would keep me in the loop.
"Well J tried to call the other morning..."
-I sleep in since I don't get home from work until after 1 AM...
"You work???"
-Arrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh! (I didn't say it...but I thought it!)

Oh...but it got better...
"So just where are you going to fit 8 people in that house?"
So help me! If one more person from his side or my side ask me that freakin' question without having some sort of freakin' solution...they are dead-in-the-water!

Training and diet musings:
Anyhow...if I don't hike with Ray and Kat tomorrow I'll do some r-deads and pull-throughs for the hammies. My glutes are still stinging! And...I think I finally got through my plateau on the leaning out.

I have been mulling things over all week and running my diet through a 'microscope' so to speak. I suspect that I wasn't getting enough EFA's and calcium (When you are lactose intolerant that is easy to do!) I tried keeping my fat around 20% this week and discovered that it's really not do-able with my training schedule. So I decided I won't freak when it creeps up towards 30%.

So anyhow...I started adding in more nuts, plain yogurt and flax and boom! I'm leaning out and it's actually more noticeable.

Saturday totals:
Cals: 1,467
Fat(g): 49
Carbs(g): 127
Protein(g): 134
29/32/37
A little low on the protein and carbs even for a 'low' day. I missed a meal and there is no way I can eat enough to make it up. I'm actually starting to have a really tough time getting enough cals in to support my training. I'm suspecting the lack of hunger is a combination of stress and the hot weather. I've never been good about eating during times of high stress or when the heat waves hit NE.

LOL, don't you love it when the extended family just assumes that you're going to drop everything and rearrange your life to accommodate their plans for get-togethers? Like, why wouldn't you want to do that?

Eh! Makes me wish I had that elephant gun from Jumangi!

They do this to me all the time...they all just figure that since I'm self-employed and only work as a tutor and nanny that I have allllllll this time on my hands.

I actually wanted to slap the mil over the "you work?" comment...what part of I take care of a 9 year old while her mother works second shift, attending to all her needs and tutoring her makes that 'not a job'?

I'd like to see them juggle my schedule!

Agreed!

Had a breakfast trip with my mom. Did a ton of packing and moving this AM. Then took off for a three hour hike with Ray and Kat.

Sunday's totals:
Cals: 1,596
Fat(g): 52
Carbs(g): 145
Protein(g): 137
29/34/35
*Not too bad considering I ended up having an unexpected 'cheat' this morning when my mom and I went out for coffee and a muffin at the local bakery/coffee shop.

Default Monday

The scale is still creeping down! (I know it! I said weigh-ins only on Wednesday...but I just had to check when I pulled my 'tight' jeans on and they were loose...)

Cardio 1: 15 minutes - heavy bag/kick work
Cardio 2: 30 minutes - short Budokon practice
I managed to bruise up my knees over the past couple of hikes and with all
the packing, lifting and moving. I didn't realize how badly until I hit that bag! Owie! And last night the fibro-achies hit. My joints were screaming...hence my choice to cut my heavy bag work down and toss in the Budokon.

Today's totals:
Cals: 2,206
Fat(g): 58
Carbs(g): 227
Protein(g): 204
23/37/38
*Normally Tuesday is my 'high' day...but I just kept feeling light-headed and 'off' today. Could be the heat and from running up and down stairs as well as in and out of the house packing, cleaning and carrying boxes hither and thither. So I decided to bump things up today. I'm feeling better now.

Oh yeah...I killed another bagless vacuum today *sigh* those things never seem to be able to stand up to the use I put them through. At least I can pirate the good parts off this one for Rissa in case her vac (same model) gives her trouble. Then I dropped my 'old faithful' vac from the top shelf (near the ceiling) on to the cellar floor, luckily its working fine. I had to hunt up bags for that thing online since I'm almost out. It's nearly impossible to find bags for that thing anymore.

great job with the loose clothes and good job killing the vacuum! death to all vacuums! You should go get one of those little robot roomba vacuums...LOL.
