Default Chester Letterboxes hike log

Chester Letterboxes - 09-23

Well, the days are getting shorter and Gypsy and I haven't done much letterboxing this year. So we decided to start going after some! It's cool because we often get into some really interesting areas we might not have found otherwise. And we both like history and quite often we find out something we wouldn't have known. And even though the hikes are often shorter they can take longer because we have to use the clues we find online at Letterboxing North America: http://www.letterboxing.org/index.php ... and some clues can prove to be very vague.

So we had decided to head out to the western Massachusetts hill town of Chester. It has three letterboxes hidden there and one of them is at one of our favorite places, Sanderson Brook Falls.

Our first Lb search, Aquarius, is part of a series. (We didn't do the series as we were only planning on searching in the town of Chester.) http://www.letterboxing.org/BoxView...._#11:_Aquarius
This proved to be interesting as we were not sure we had found the correct cemetery and we decided to drive the length of the road we were on first to be sure. Once we were certain we had the right place we discovered that the cemetery was in fact a combination of three. We knew that cemeteries were moved when Quabbin Reservoir was built. We had not realized that other reservoir and dam projects in the state had meant that other cemeteries were also moved. Learn something new everyday! Now we know! It actually was a very easy box for us. So we logged in and headed out for our next letterbox.

The Letterbox Look Bambi! http://www.letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=8373&boxname=Look%20%20Bambi! was to be located along a trail I had heard about but had not found much information about. The Keystone Arch Bridges Trail. http://keystonearches.org/kabtrail/ As I said, I had heard about keystone arches, and that there was a trail to some...but what we found was absolutely amazing!

The arch bridges are part of a rail road system that goes through the Berkshires. Heard of "Whistler's Mother"? The famous painting...well little did I know. (And I'm a history buff to some extent.) Her husband and son were both involved in the design and building of the bridges. George Washington Whistler even traveled to Russia at the request of the Czar to help with the Trans-Siberian railroad!
More for the history buffs: http://keystonearches.org/history/

The letterbox is very early in the hike. But you know Gypsy and I! We just had to do the whole trail and go see the arches as close up as possible. (You see a still in use arch early on, and we were lucky enough to be there when in a west bound train went over it.) We didn't have a map of this hike. But at the trail head there had been a very good map. I took a picture of it. Later on in the hike we would be glad that I did!

We were able to see another of the arches that is on private land and not accessible to the public through the trees at one point. We also saw the now also not assessible entry to an old artist's colony along the way. We found our letterbox without much problem and happily headed out to explore the length of the trail.

At this point I should tell you. Gypsy chose to hike with her full pack and I chose to hike with my hydration pack. Gypsy has recently added a section of what is her foam support for in her hammock. Most people use them under their sleeping bags on the ground. Hammock users cut them down (Usually) and put them in their hammock for support and warmth. They stick out on either side of the pack a bit.

Now you can probably see where this is going. Poor Gypsy ended up being on the receiving end of my mirth a good part of the day. I always knew were she was. Usually just by the 'thunk' her stick makes as we go along. But this day I kept hearing her roll get caught on branches...and at one point in particular I turned to find that the branch had gotten 'into' the roll and started to spin Gypsy around. I...umm...well, I broke down into a fit of laughter. (Man o' man I am so doomed when it's my turn to train with my roll attached to my pack...this will all come back to haunt me I'm sure.)

It's a good thing that Gypsy is tenacious. And that she bears up well under my mirth! We made great time along a very nice trail. We found a cool foot bridge that crossed over a small stream that was reminiscent of the jams we trekked earlier this year out in the town of Windsor. And we were totally thrilled to find that we had the chance to walk, climb around and explore not one but two more of the arches. They are so cool. They absolutely must be experienced!

Now as we got to the end of the trail we noted that there was supposed to be on other arch destroyed by a flood (in the 20's I believe) a bit of a ways down the track. So we trekked along, found what may have been the ruins as well as a really interesting old car wreck! We pulled up that map picture on my camera and zoomed in. We weren't s ure we were in the right spot so we kept on hiking on the access road near the rail bed until we were back to the river and a road that passes under the bridge we were on. Thinking that we were probably well beyond were we were supposed to be we headed back. We were back on the old rail bed when we heard another train come through. We didn't quite make it back to the arches in time to photograph it, but we did see it head through from the other bridge. And let me tell you, Gypsy ran like hell to try and catch a picture of that train!

We made pretty good time back and figured that we still had time to do the final letterbox, Wear a Poppy On Memorial Day: http://www.letterboxing.org/BoxView....n_Memorial_Day that was near Sanderson Brook Falls. http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/western/chbl.htm
We went up the falls first and climbed around taking pictures as it's one our favorite places to be. Then we headed back down the trail to find the box. Both a bit dubious because we felt the clues were vague...and yes, we were right, the clues were vague.

We had to make a couple passes along the trail to find the letterbox. And it was while we were checking a place I had checked on the first pass that Gypsy spotted our box on the second pass. It was getting darker and cooler and we still were dressed for midday so we hurried up a bit to stamp in the log and get moving back to the truck.

At the truck I pulled my long sleeved shirt back on and we headed out looking for a place for me to get something to eat. By now we were both starving. Gypsy had munched on gorp all day and had held of eating her wrap because she didn't want to eat when I didn't have my sandwich. I had used up all my gels, bars, and my gorp and was sipping on the last of my gatorade when we stopped at KFC.
Well, when we pulled into the parking lot we noticed that the whole thing was one lane and one way. And we pretty much ended up with the last spot at the very end...right where the line for the drive-thru turns. I had said to Gypsy something along the lines of, "this is going to be hard to get out of." Little did I know how hard.

I ran in to order some food and Gypsy finished changing into her warmer gear and started on her wrap while I was inside. When I got back out we decided that since the drive-thru lane was so busy we would just sit and eat in the truck. I finished up my meal, started the truck and waited for an opening with my back up lights on.

And I waited, and waited, and waited. At one point we talked about having Gypsy get out and play traffic cop. But the people in the line were being pretty aggressive and I worried they would try and run her over. And then as we talked about how to get out of there it dawned on us that we would be stuck in the stupid line of rude people to boot!

Okay...as we are talking I'm eye-balling the curb in front of my Blazer...and the grade to the side road beyond my Blazer...and how deep is that curb anyhow...and all the while we're talking I'm watching one car after another pull up and not one of them is going to let me out. So about the time Gypsy jokingly says you should just go over the curb ... and as I'm saying I really don't want to get in trouble for tearing up the lawn...and I'm waiting and waiting and waiting for a freakin' opening and getting more pissed by the moment.

The freakin' hellz with it! I put my Blazer in gear and drove over the dayumed curb, down the incline, off the curb and onto the side street! Whipped my Blazer around and back up that side street to the main road. Freakin' block my ass in...I don't think so! Man o' man! You guys should've heard the rebel yell that came outta Gypsy!

So all in all, we had a great day. And even got in a little baja fun too.

Default Sunday - dead lift day

Aight...5-Tetra log:
Since today is my dead day I didn't have to get up at 4:30 to take this. I woke at that time. Smiled to myself with relief and crashed back to sleep. Got up had my AM shake, then breakfast and coffee. I'm feeling a bit congested today due to my asthma. Coffee opened me up a bit.

Took my 5-Tetra an hour before I planned to lift, showered, vac'd the house. I was feeling a bit of 'something'. Nothing severe...but I could tell my energy was ramping up a bit. A good thing since I'm in a bit of a fibro-funk today.

It's humid here today after yesterday's damp chill it's got me all off kilter. About 15 minutes before I headed to my cellar gym to train I started to feel hotter and sweatier. As I was pulling plates off my other bars to load up for my deads I pinched my first finger on my right hand really bad between a pair of 10's. Sweat really started to pour out of me then. It hurt like a b*tch and I could feel my adrenaline really kick in. Hmmm...interesting.

After bleeding all over the dayumed floor and realizing that I was indeed going to need a bandaid I finally got back to loading the bar. My last deads were 110# I felt really amped up so I tossed 115# on my bar today and got down to business. Wholey sheit! That bar came off the floor wicked easy and I pulled out 12 reps easy.

Now...at this point I stopped a minute to think things over. I didn't feel jittery at all like the day I was feeling down and grabbed an AMP drink on the way to the gym. But I felt 'open'. If any of you have lived with asthma you'll understand what I mean. Some days you know your system/body is just not getting enough oxygen in and the dayumed inhalers we have to use only clear the lungs...but do nothing for the rest of the body except bring up the heart rate and often bring on jitters. On good days...you can feel that your body is 'open' and taking in oxygen properly.

So...as I'm looking at that loaded bar and feeling 'open' and energetic I spotted my last two little plates. My little 2.5# puppies. I took a few moments to add those little puppies on and went on to do 12 more reps of 120# ... hot fawkin' dayum! Form was just a wee bit messy on the last three reps. I'm outta plates now too. I'll go back to 115# next week, but it's well beyond time for more plates.

Dead lift day:
Set 1 - 12r/115# *Up 5#
Set 2 - 12r/120# *Up 5# more!

I can't wait to see how things go in the gym on Tuesday now.

Monday's 5-Tetra log:
Up at 4:30 AM...looked at the tablets sitting on the nightstand said, "screw it!" and went back to sleep. Alarm went off at 6 AM and I took them then.

Got up and moving fed the crew and after an hour had passed had my AM shake and a while later my Kashi oatmeal. Loaded my hydration pack, got my lunch and restocked my GU and Pria's and headed out to pick up MrsJ for our hike. On the way to pick her up I stopped for a coffee. They only had the 'strong' stuff on and hot at the local store. So I grabbed a small cup of that...

Boy o' boy...within 15 minutes I knew I had added caffiene to that yohimbine! I didn't get jittery or shakey...but let's just say I hit the trails in high gear and never really slowed down until we reached the summit of Soapstone Mtn and climbed the tower where we had our lunch. I actually kept making myself slow it down a bit because I was 'zooming'!

I'm actually still feeling very energetic and it's been hours since I took my morning dose.
*Also beginning to wonder if the dose according to my weight, plus the dose I'm taking for cutting might not be too much? Have to think about this a bit more.

Default Tuesday - Full body day

5-Tetra log:
Today is a training day...so I just took my dosing so I can head to the gym in a bit. I'm still wondering if adding the extra two tablets to the dose for my weight is a bit much for me. I had a slight headache late in the afternoon yesterday. Not sure if it's related to the 5-Tetra. I only had one cup of coffee this morning with breakfast. I don't think I want to have another now that I've taken my 5-T. I was totally 'zooming' yesterday on the trail and through most of the day. One coffee is enough with this stuff. I'm going to have to pick up some decaf.

On a different note:
One of the other boards I'm on had a post about sparkpeople.com. It's similar to fitday.com in many ways and also a free service. My daughter and I started using fitday a couple years ago and like it so much that we bought the home edition.

Anyhow...it looks like a good program for someone starting out. It has some great features. The only thing I was concerned about was when I ran the numbers for my cutting it came back with a slighty low caloric intake for someone as active as I am and that was even after logging in my cardio and lifting. And the exercises they suggest are pretty basic and many of the people I know on the boards are well beyond them. But...it would be a great place to start for someone just getting into fitness. So for the time being and just for the 'heckuvit' I'm running the sparkpeople program as well as my fitday.

I'm going to take a moment here to honor my son Jer. He's been awarded a Bronze Star today. And a moment to remember his partner W. Moss...lost in the blast that injured my son and another man while all three were on duty clearing IED's in Baghdad, Iraq earlier this spring.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
I'm going to have to wait to take my 5-Tetra just before I leave for the gym and grab a book to read or something. My daughter-of-my-heart called today as she was feeling very anxious about Jer's award ceremony. You all know my family comes first. So I ended up getting to the gym about 20 minutes late. But all in all I think things went pretty well. At least I was happy.
Tuesday - Full body day:
Squats
Set 1 12r/100#
Set 2 12r/100# *Even though I was able to do 110# last week I had decided that I wanted to start incorporating a slight pause at the bottom. So I felt that 100# was a good place to start.
Seated calf-raises 12r/140#
Machine calf-raises 12r/140#
Machine row # 5 12r/65#
Machine row #19 12r/65#
Alt. Arnold press 8r/20# 4r/20# *20# is a bit tough...but 15 is too easy. Just have to keep at these.
Chest to incline DB front raises 12r/10#
DB bench press 12r/20#
Incline DB flyes 8r/15# 4r/15#
Alt. seated db hammer-curls 12r/20#
Alt. incline db-curls 12r/15#
Triceps machine # 7 12r/65# outter setting
Triceps machine #16 12r/35#
Abs - skipped today didn't want to wait for the machine.
Cardio: walk - hour and a half. (With my mom, her knee is still off so we took it easy.)
5-T log: Up at 5:30 took my 5-T and fell back to sleep. Upper body hurts today...did not want to get out of bed.
Yesterday when I got under the bar for my squats it hurt. I've been fighting with my fibro and SAD lately and having the bar hit my trigger points when I feel like crud is not always a good thing. I didn't get light headed or anything so I kept going and did my squats. Today I'm paying for it with a very sore and stiff upper body. I hate when my fibro kicks me back. :-/
I only had one cup of coffee again today. Did my cardio a short time later and I worked up a helluva sweat. Went a round with my heavy bag. The last time I used yohimbine was a couple years back. I had noticed then that I 'heat up' faster when I'm active. So I did expect this.
Today's cardio: 20 minutes with the heavy bag.
Weighed in and my weight is going down steadily even though I'm stubbornly using up the Cytogainer I had bought until my allthewhey order gets here. I'm going to be interested to see what happens when I no longer have the creatine mono running around my system.
Oh hellz yeah STUK! Once that starts we have to go to the reservations and even then we need to wear orange! Not a problem since I'm a big believer in wildlife management and hunting. Thanks...I'm working hard to kick some serious a$$ and lose some weight too. Glad you stopped by.
Well today freakin' kicked ass!
5-Tetra log:
Didn't have to get up to take it today since today is a lifting day. I like it better this way to be sure. Had my AM shake, then a bit later my breakfast, then 30 minutes later my 5-T. Then had to wait the 60 minutes. (I decided last night to train at home today.)
I was a bit antsy between my AM shake and my breakfast, so even though I don't normally do cardio I did 20 minutes on the recumbent bike. As I was listening to my satelite electronic music station I got to thinking that I really should weigh my bars, collars and handles.
Cardio: 20 minutes on the r-bike
So after I took my 5-T I grabbed my postal scale and my bathroom scale and headed downstairs to weigh my bars, handles and collars. And wow! Was I ever shocked! A couple of them weighed much more than I had realized! I also found two more 2.5 plates I forgot I had.
Anyhow...I'm going to need incremental plates soon, but if I swap out collars on a couple things I can bring the weight up incrementally that way too. So that was cool.
Okay...it was time for my workout. I remembered how energetic I was last week, so last night as I was planning today's training I had decided to do legs, but since I can't do my squats at home I decided to do sl-deads and ham curls.
So today was a full body day. (I often put two full body days in as I get closer to winter.)
Full body:
Barbell good mornings 12r/42#
Hypers 12r/15#
SLDL
set 1 12r/97#
set 2 12r/97#
Lying ham curls 12r/40#
Seated bb calf-raises 12r/97#
Standing bb calf-raises 12r/97#
Close-grip reverse lat pulldowns 12r/70#
Face pulls 12r/50#
Seated alt. db presses 12r/21.5#
Chest to incline front raises 12r/10#
DB bench press 12r/21.5#
DB flyes 8r/15# 4r/15#
Alt.db hammer-curls 12r/21.5#
Alt. incline db-curls 5r/15# 7r/10# *starting to get tired here.
Triceps rope press 12r/40# *Up 10 Hooyah!
Triceps overhead 'warrior' extensions 12r/30#
Abs 2 sets of V-ups 15r
Musings:
I've had so much extra energy lately that over the past couple of days I also tackled my gardens. They are a disaster. I was away all spring, and with all the rain they went wild. When I got back from Idaho I realized that I should just wait until autumn to get them tamed. So that's what I started to do. 2 hours yesterday and 2 hours today.
I have two bushes I cut back that I have to dig out and move this weekend. So I have some serious yard work ahead of me as I've only been working on the gardens that I put in around the house. They start on the east side of the house and wrap to the south and west. Then I have to cut the hellz out of my wisteria, clear the weeds out of my raised beds, move a yellow lilac bush and pump out the pond and slap the garden around the pond back into shape. When all that is done it'll be time to make sure the horse fence is secure before winter comes in.
If all this activity doesn't strip some weight off me...nothing will.
5-Tetra: Up early yesterday and today to take it.
Friday's hike:
Letterboxing 09-29-06
Granville, Otis, Montgomery, and Russell, MA
Granville
Our destination was a small graveyard along route 57 in Granville, MA. Gypsy and I, as we often tend to do, took the scenic route out over the Connecticut River again. As we drove along it rained in spits and spurts, and sometimes even a driving rain went along with us. We laughed as we headed across state and tried to figure out if we were determined or ditzy for attempting to letterbox on a day that had such sketchy weather predictions. We really didn't want to spend the day inside watching a movie. We just like being outside!
We stopped for sandwiches and the rain slowed a bit, which got our hopes up, we found our destination in short order and set about looking for the object in our clues that would lead us to our letterbox. We meandered back and forth amongst old head stones, not quite finding the name that we needed to put our clues together...and the rain picked up all the while.
Finally, back at the area where we had started we chatted and realized that we had only been looking at the name at the top of each stone, so we went back and started to read all the stones. By the way, some of the stones were so old that reading the names was nearly impossible. We found some stones hidden under the branches of trees and a few stones were face down on the ground and then there were the stones that had their faces sheared off by the New England elements. Shortly into our search I found the name we needed! The wife of a man listed at the top of a stone, she was represented by her maiden name, I had read his name...but not the whole stone. Lesson learned! We got our compass reading, found our letterbox in short order and headed to the truck with it to log in since the rain was coming down pretty steadily at that point.
After we were done Gypsy ran back to re-hide the letterbox while I de-fogged the car. We were both pretty darn damp by this time. Gypsy pulled out our other clues and the atlas I keep in the Blazer so that we can find our way to our many hikes and adventures and as I drove she plotted our course and let me know which roads I needed to take next. Driving along with us can be pretty amusing. We end up laughing and giggling quite often. Sometimes we get off course a bit when we get chatting, but we always make it to out destinations.
Otis
Our destination here was the famous Bonnie Brae Girl Scout Camp. (At least it is famous in these parts!) We were searching for a letterbox planted by a Girl Scout troop.
The rain stopped and the sun came out, but the windchill dropped, the wind picked up and being damp from slogging around in the rain made us a bit chilly! The hike around the camp was pretty darn cool. We saw camping yurts and old gold rush style tents as well as the usual cabins. The box was not there. Probably had been inadvertently removed during routine cleaning and maintenence of the park. Oh well. It was a neat place and a lovely drive out there...off to search for our next destination...
But we got waylaid for a bit on another adventure! We decided to check out two state parks in the area first. The first area was part of the Tolland State Forest located in Otis. It's more for ATV use. We then headed out to the main part of the Tolland State Forest. What an awesome place! We decided that we want to do an overnight there next year after I get all my gear together and in warmer weather since some of the primitive sites are almost on the lake.
Montgomery
So off we head, northwest this time to find a cemetery in Montgomery for our next letterbox, Gypsy navigating, me driving...and don't we find this really cool, twisting, winding steep mountain side single lane dirt road! I loved it, poor Gypsy, she happened to look up and out her side of the truck and at a rather steep drop off.
We found out cemetery with very little trouble and with the sun still out we donned our jackets and went off to find the headstone in the clue. I finally find a family with the last name when from across the cemetery Gypsy yells, "You've got to come here!" I asked if she found the headstone because I was loath to give up my search. "No, but you have got to see this!" What she found was a section of petrified wood as part of a memorial grave marker. It was cool. But now I had to go back and start in that area again.
In short order I found the headstone and using the compass we got our bearing and found the box. Damaged. And the log was soaked. We were able to stamp the boxes stamp into our logs, but our stamp into the boxes log was only barely discernable, and the writing, we left a note about the boxes condition, was even less discernable. When I got back last night and logged my finds into the LbNA web site I did contact the placer and let them know the condition of the box. In the meantime. Gypsy and I cleaned, dried, covered and re-hide the box and headed out for our last two letterboxes of the day.
Russell
Once again with Gypsy navigating we headed down that very cool dirt road and back to the cemetery we had passed earlier. (Gypsy had inadvertently navigated us past it earlier on our way to Montgomery. She hadn't seen it as she was studying the atlas so intensely, but I had seen it.) So we parked my Blazer and looked out upon a rather large cemetery compared to the other ones the placer of this series (A zodiac series.). After taking a moment to double check the name and date of birth and death for this headstone we decided that since it was in the 1800's again we could safely ignore all the newer stones and head to the older section. Plus they gave us a clue that didn't need a compass. We had to look for a large triple trunked tree.
While I was off admiring some elegantly carved headstones Gypsy spotted the tree. We happily found this box in very good condition and it had been found recently too boot. We logged in and made our way through the headstones at a leisurely pace back to my Blazer. I might not have mentioned this before, but Gypsy and I both have a fascination with older headstones and monuments and memorials. So we tend to stop to photograph and admire them.
Back at the truck we headed back out for our last letterbox of the day. Located on an old abandoned section of route 23 in Russell and along a branch river that flows down to the Westfield River. It was a short hike up, but absolutely gorgeous and again fascinating. I took off for a few moments to photograph and get a video clip of the river and a small pair of falls. Gypsy went off to find the box that was nearby.
I had brought along an 'extra' set of clues, which we did use. It was to our first box of the day. Our second box was missing in action, but we did find the rest of our letterboxes for the day. We were actually kicking ourselves though because if I had brought along a couple more sets of clues to nearby boxes we might have had time to get in one or two more.
Since we finished up early I decided that I wanted to drive over to Deerfield for some local honey. We were in the complete opposite direction across the state. So I had Gypsy find a route to where I wanted to get us and off we went. I got the brainstorm to head up Mt Sugarloaf for supper with a view of the Connecticut River on the way home after getting my honey. That's the ride Gypsy is not fond of. But after we got my honey and some pierogi's and freshly made hot Italian sausage for Joe, Gypsy had warmed up to the idea and off we went.
The view was even more stunning than last time. I went nuts when I thought I spotted a fire tower on a distant mountain top that I was pretty sure we had climbed. We could see other things way off in the distance and then remembered that we both had our binoculars in our packs! So we trekked back to the truck for them. Then back to the observation deck after figuring out that I had indeed spotted a distant fire tower. As we studied the expansive and clear landscape spread out before us Gypsy spotted a hawk. And we watched her until we could no longer see her in our binoculars either. Seeing the hawk reminded us that the migrations are starting. So next week are heading to Goat's Peak in the Holyoke Mountain Range to hopefully observe part of the migration of the various hawk species of New England.
After spending quite a bit of time looking things over, we headed back to the bulletin board at the entrance to the observation area. Figured out that we had seen the Mt Toby fire tower. And yes, we had climbed to it and been able to enter the tower and see the stunning view from that side of the Connecticut River. After checking out the trail system and deciding on a hike in the very near future we headed to the truck to head back home.
Dead day! I really do prefer to take my 5-Tetra later in the morning for my lifting days. But I would probably forgot to take it otherwise...so I'll keep taking it in the early AM on my non-lifting days.
Today's training:
Romanian dead lifts
set 1 12r/120#
set 2 12r/120#
Ham pullthroughs
set 1 40#
set 2 40#
Cable glut kickbacks 12r/30#
Cable hip abductions 12r/30#
*Still have tons of energy...tomorrow is a hiking day. So no more leg training for me today! As it was I threw in 4 extra sets to burn off some energy. Almost has me wanting to start my agility training early. But that is for my next 10 weeks. The last thing I need is to crash and burn from overtraining. And that can happen very easily for me at this time of the year.
Cardio: 20 minutes on the r-bike
