The grain order arrived before I trained...so I carried 4-50# grain sacks down a flight of stairs to the grain bins. My quads are still really, really sore. I wanted to carry grain sacks like a hole-in-the-head. I told myself to consider it sand-bag work.
Week 1 - Day 2 Back/shoulders Face pulls set 1 - 8r/30# set 2 - 8r/35# set 3 - 8r/40# V-grip pull downs set 1 - 8r/40# set 2 - 8r/50# set 3 - 8r/60# Bent over cable rows set 1 - 8r/50# set 2 - 8r/60# set 3 - 8r/70# Chest to incline DB rows set 1 - 8r/15# set 2 - 8r/15# set 3 - 8r/15# M-ball ex rotations set 1 - 8r/3# set 2 - 8r/3# set 3 - 8r/3# M-ball internal rotations set 1 - 8r/3# set 2 - 8r/3# set 3 - 8r/3# Arnold presses set 1 - 8r/8# set 2 - 8r/10# set 3 - 8r/12# "Side-Scratchers" set 1 - 8r/10# set 2 - 8r/12# set 3 - 8r/15# Went through the forms I know...tonight will be interesting. My quads do not want to co-operate with any of my low stances. Oh fun. Not!

I made it through class without too much trouble.
She kept saying, "Good lord you're fast!" while we were doing strike and block work. I finally told her that I also do heavy bag work...and practice strikes, kicks and blocks for speed from time to time. Sifu moved three of his older students into the adult class. They were a blast to watch. Although...I was surprised to hear the kids complain through some of the stretching. I'm such a mom...I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying, "Breath normally and within 20 seconds your body will adjust as you relax." But so help me...if they make it a habit...I just know it will slip out!

So...my old nemesis the dreaded push-up is haunting me again. I have to improve them. There are no two ways about it. So my plan of action. Just plain drop down and do 4 slow controlled push-ups every so often throughout the day when I have a few moments here around the house/studio.
So far today I've fit in 2 sets of 4. Later tonight I plan on doing some elevated push-ups as well. I'm also taking some time to do my plank and low-plank position and just hold them for a slow count. My shoulders and wrists hate me. I noticed some slight bruising on the outside of my hands today...then remembered my work with the bamboo circles the other night. Eh...the bruises will fade. My quads are still rather sore...but I'm doing fine otherwise.

Quads are feeling fine today finally. A bit sore in the hips I noticed. But the cold and damp have crept in here in NE...so I'm thinking it's more weather related. Shoulders are a sore. I expected that.
I stepped on the scale yesterday AM... The anabolic diet can be such a mind-f*ck? Dayum...I added in more clean carbs this week since I felt so gassed on Tuesday and my weight shot up. BUT! According to my jeans, I'm still leaner! And actually, my muscles feel 'tighter' and harder. I'm suspecting it's the three added nights of MA training...but I should point out that the Atro-Phex package mentioned something to this effect as well. Most days I only remember to take two Atro-Phex and the other night I didn't need/take any before my MA class. So it will be interesting to see how I do over the next couple of weeks since I have changed the diet and I rarely remember to take a second dosing of two, yet will sometimes take a third one before my MA class. It's raining again today. We need it desperately as our ground water level is very low for this time of year. I'm really getting antsy about being off the trails. The knee is recovered and I'm not even having trouble with it during my MA training...so I'm jonesing pretty badly for a hike.

Been down sick the past few days...finally feeling a bit human today. Not quite well enough to drive 30 minutes over to the "Y" to do a heavy legs day...so I pulled out my core conditioning routine since my backpacking has slowed down. I had been mulling it over recently and was thinking that many of the exercises in that routine will also benefit me in my MA training. So...I figured why not bring it back a bit earlier than I normally would?
So today's training is as follows: Week 2 - Day 1 Core conditioning routine Cleans 3 sets/8r - 30# Overhead presses 3 sets/8r - 30# *5 pounds more than I normally carry - 5 pounds less than what my pack would carry loaded for a couple days. Piece of cake this year! I can now cross a river with my pack over head! ![]() Standing m-ball oblique twist 30 reps to each side - 8# DB swing throughs 3 sets/10r - 15# M-ball Saxon side bends 3 sets/8r - 3# each hand. My upper body 'clicked' a lot. I may toss these and put in something else. BB side low lunges 3 sets/8r - 30# BB step-ups/step-downs 3 sets/8r each side - 30# Weighted hip-hikes 24r each side - 4# M-ball hanging knee raises 2 sets/8r - 8# That's it...the grip went to hellz at the end on the last two reps. M-ball slant boards twists/crunch - right/center/left 8r/8r/8r - 3# M-ball flat back jack-knives 3 sets/8r - 3# V-grip pull downs set 1/8r - 70# set 2/10r - 60# set 3/12r - 50# One-arm pull downs set 1/12r - 30# set 2/8r - 40# set 3/5r - 50# Cable 'wood chopper' 3 sets/8r each side - 30# Tri-rope press 3 sets/10r - 30# Was getting tired so I blew off horizontal pull ups and my elevated push ups. Forgot to do my Good mornings and hypers. ![]() After supper: 2 sets/4r - push-ups 2 sets/4r - push-ups from my knuckles Planks and elbow planks - basically just held the plank position until I got a bit shaky. *I can hold plank position for quite a while though.

So, I had a bit of a headache. I took some motrin and headed to class regardless.
I'm so glad I did. I worked my backside off. It was worth every minute. I'm going to have to work on my jumping side kicks. My right leg kicks fine when I jump from my left, but it doesn't like to tuck/chamber correctly when I kick with my left leg. Looks like I'll be working out on the lawn practicing the kick from my right. (The right side is the side that took the most nerve damage from the lyme...but I'm confident that I can get a decent jump with practice.)Sifu is great...I'm having trouble memorizing my full stances. He let me get a vid clip of him going through the stances tonight. Now I can hook my little vid cam up to my tv and practice my stances.

6 hours - 10 miles (possibly more)
I'll write up my trip log tomorrow in the meantime here's the 'short' version: Started at Quabbin's Gate-35, headed to the shore...the water was down so low that we followed the shore in a north-westerly curve without too much trouble up past the Gate 33 area, to Gate-31 and on to the Gate-30 area. Made our way back via the road we avoided on the way out and headed back to the shore where we once again took the shoreline, crossed a very mucky brook that is normally a river going into the Quabbin, going south this time and approximately 3/4 of the way to Gate-36. Hauled it around at G-36 intersection and headed back. It was a very good hike. The shoreline was absolutely criss-crossed with pug marks. Some of the more noticeable: Raccoon Otter Bobcat Moose Deer Geese Coyote Weasel/mink Fisher (Fishercat as they tend to be known in this area...related to weasels.)

So I woke up with the ear/nose/throat/chest thing bothering me again. (It hit Kate again as well. I stopped by her place to set up her printer for her as well.) I finally broke down and ran down town to pick up some cold meds and cold/immune therapy. Then I slept all afternoon.
Just spent an hour+ going through my stances, kicks, blocks and strikes. Bless Eric for being so gracious as to let me get a vid clip so I can practice.

I took it easy the past couple of days and rested up. I'm feeling better today so I headed down for my class. I did fine. Sifu wants Amber and I to test soon. We were both surprised. Means I had better practice my backside off.

Big ups for you Hawk! Get a little color around your waist. Can't wait until you tell us all about the guys you whip up on during sparring. If you are able to get into that considering all of you other activities and past medical history. Though, I would surely enjoy going a few rounds on the mats with ya! Just no hiking boots ok?

Sifu had asked me if I could come in for Saturdays. I believe he holds the sparring classes then. At this point I'm still on the trails most Fridays and keep Saturday as my recovery day so I told him Saturdays are out for a while for me. He did have me spar with Becky one evening since it was only the adults in the class that night. It was pretty cool. The women I train with are so tiny that I find it a bit unnerving because I'm so aware of how much damage I can cause. I worry about hurting Amber when we pair up. Especially because she's always saying, "Good lord you are strong and fast! And then doesn't she clip herself in the chin with my fist last night when she misjudged one of her mantis blocks. I felt so bad! I don't worry with Becky as she can hold her own quite well. Part of our training is self defense, so Sifu usually ends each class working with Amber and I individually so we get a feel for having an opponent that is taller and heavier than we are. I actually enjoy that. Although last night I started a mantis block wrong and said,. "oh wait!" Then had Sifu laughing his ass off when I said, "nevermind...you just killed me when I screwed up that block! No opponent is going to wait for me to correct a block!" Anyhow...in a spar you're safe. I hike in Teva hiking sandals or EMS trail runners! BTW...just for the record. We did 4 sets of various push-ups last night, conventional, on our fingers, on our fists and triangle (tricep) push-ups...can I just say...OW! My shoulders and tri's are feeling that today!

As far as shoes: Puma and Addidas make some nice mat shoes. Go for either cloth or real leather as the synthetic stuff gets beat to death. We don't wear shoes at all in our Dojang so the pair that I have is just for walking around during tournaments and promotions.
So..... Anytime I am up your way we can get in some lifting and some sparring! Schweeeeeeeet!

Awesome...thanks for the info. I was getting frustrated about something for my feet when we train. I prefer barefoot myself. But MA has laws against barefoot in public places/buildings ironically. Even the dancers used to have buy what are called hermes for their feet because technically they couldn't train or dance barefoot!
Correction: Lifting, sparring and hiking!
