Bright and sunny today for the day after a snow storm! The trees were covered in a fragile layer of ice that would crack and break with the brisk winds out of the northwest today. Errand day before the next storm hits, so I ran downtown and picked up Michele and took off for the stores.

Breakfast: *Forgot to eat in my haste to get going on my errands.

Lunch: Sweet and sour chicken fingers and fried rice with won-ton soup and tea.
*Took Michele out to lunch at our favorite Asian restaurant.

Had a nap when I got home...my SAD has been kicking my butt big time lately.

Supper: Deep dish pepperoni pizza.
*I knew I wouldn't feel like cooking after all the running today, so I picked up our fav frozen pizzas for tonight.

Shoulders & Calves:
Shoulders:
BB Upright rows 3 sets - 8 reps
Lateral DB raises 2 sets - 10 reps
Alternating/descending DB front raises 1 set - 20 reps
*I was clicking like crazy with the lateral and the front raises.
Calves:
Seated BB calf-raises 3 sets - 8 reps
Standing DB calf-raises 2 sets - 10 reps
Bodyweight Calf-raises on the stairs. 1 set - 20 reps

Post w/o shake: *None today, I forgot to pick up my vanilla whey!

Woke to Karissa coming home early, she tried to get home before the sleet storm. I flew out of bed, fed the crew and ran to Larry's for grain, then I decided to head to Brimfield and swap trucks with Joe since Wales and Brimfield had just sanded. I figured I could get most of the way home in his truck with little trouble.

Of course just as I pulled in at the bottom of the hill with his truck I spotted the town sander...behind me! That is just the way my luck goes. I made it home safe and so did Joe a couple hours later. He had my truck loaded with 250#'s of grain and 4-wheel drive.

Breakfast: *Forgot it in my rush to get grain and swap trucks before the roads got too much worse.

Lunch: Sweet & sour chicken, fried rice and an egg roll with Chai.
*Left overs from yesterday's lunch out with Michele.

This morning I realized that I did my calves with my shoulders yesterday. I have no idea why I did that. I always do my triceps with my shoulders.
Today is back day...and I still have to do my triceps. I'm not sure I want to do my tri's with my back. Have to wait and see how things go.

Yesterday was my 'rest' day. I tried to sleep in...the dogs had other plans for me. It's been overcast for days, my SAD is killing me. I don't feel like eating and all I want to do is sleep, although I did manage to get all my meals in yesterday and keep myself awake all day while I worked on my pencil painting. It's about 3/4 of the way finished now.

I am waiting for a FedEx delivery so I can finish it up and get it down to Nancy at GoNE so she can scan it and make giclee prints as well as mat it for me so I can frame it for Karissa. I've been working on the preliminary sketches for two more fantasy pieces. One is small, 9x12 in., the other is much larger at 22x30 in. I'll be practicing drawing dragons this week. A first for me.

Breakfast: *So after remembering to eat yesterday I turn right around and totally miss it this morning. I wasn't hungry and I was much more interested in the work in my studio.

Lunch: Turkey and provolone on a 'flatout' with honey mustard. Had a sliver of 'Black Forest cake that my MIL dropped off yesterday.

*Karissa has really been on me about drinking more water. So I've been making a conscious effort to drink more water during the day by keeping a bottle right my workboard. It's a habit I know I need to cultivate.

Supper: Steak, corn and broccoli.

Today is chest and biceps day. I still have to get my workout in. I'll do that in about an hour...preliminary sketches are calling me right now.

Chest & Biceps:
Chest:
BB flat bench 3 sets - 8 reps
BB Incline bench 2 sets - 10 reps
DB Flyes 1 set - 15 reps
Biceps:
EzBar curls 2 set - 8 reps
EzBar reverse curls 1 set - 8 reps
DB curls 2 sets - 10 reps
DB concentration 1 set - 15 reps
*My shoulders were really bothering me during my benches...it's my fibro. I'm going to try taking my yucca twice a day instead of just in the AM.

Yikes!
Thanks Musicsguy and tryinhard,
I do tend to ramble in my log don't I?
Anyhow...the piece I'm working on for my daughter is the biggest pencil painting I have ever done at 22x30 inches. I normally work from 5x7inches to 11x14 inches when using colored pencils, but the subject she gave me when she came up with this idea needed much more space. I discovered that I absolutely love having so much room to roam with my pencils. Only down side...I've been going through pencils like crazy this month! I've been ordering pencils each week for the past three weeks!

So...as soon as I get this one finished I'll post it. It's very special to me...since I added my little granddaughter into it part way through.

The next two pieces are a huge challege. They are colored pencil on black paper. I got the preliminary color wash down on the small one tonight and I discovered that you cannot make any mistakes! So I'll have to plan the large one with the dragon very carefully. I also discovered that dragons are rather tricky creatures to draw! I have reference photos of cobras, bats and iguanas that I am using to help me create this dragon. I'm having a blast.

The dragon painting will take me a while...but I'll post that when I'm done too.

Tryinhard, my brother has a dragon and a winged unicorn and few other tattoos, his winged unicorn matches my little brothers...they got them the same day. My 'other' son has a cool dragon tattoo that he just got.

That is something I had never heard of! I guess I'm safe, the tattoos I want to get are not dragons! I do have a large Phoenix planned for my right shoulder. I have the designs for two of the three I have planned and I am working on the designs for my first one. (It is in celebration of my kids.) and I have part of the Phoenix worked out. I actually have to get my rear in gear and get my first one soon. I start backpacking as soon as the weather clears here and I won't want to pack with a fresh tattoo on my left shoulder!

I'm hoping to have the one I'm working on now done by this weekend. Once I 'hang' it on my work wall I can get a straight on shot and then post it. I've actually been sending updates of my progress to Lulu, but the project is on my drafting table and I keep having to photograph it at an angle. Ending up with a bit of glare each time.

*Short Hike Day!

Breakfast: Shredded wheat with rice milk and my coffee.
*Forgot my supps in my rush to gather my winter hiking gear. At least I remembered to eat my breakfast though!

Musings From the Trail:
What an absolutely gorgeous winter day we had. It was overcast most of the hike since we have another storm coming in tonight and in fact it started to snow about an hour after I got home this afternoon.

Anyhow, our trail at Conant Brook Dam was pretty 'crunchy' but it was only slick in a couple spots. I brought along one of my old cross country ski poles and I did need it a few times today. We decided to take our favorite trail along and over one of the brooks. It took us a while to follow it downstream to find a halfway decent crossing. Mrs J and I both made it over without incident. We discovered that someone had been out a day or so ahead of us with snowshoes. There really wasn't a need for them though. We did just fine in our winter hiking sneaker/boots.

The wild birds were out in number today and we stopped a few times to observe them feeding in the pine and cedar stands along out route. We kept catching the scent of a fox in the area. I was surprized as it's a bit early for them to be marking.

Our normal route was truncated a bit due to over run of the streams from all the rain previous to the last storm, so we just added a couple loops that we don't normally do and went back over one of the trails that has a trail off of it that leads to a beaver pond where the beavers had used a 'wild stone wall' to build their dam on so I could photograph it. On the way there we thought we saw their dwelling hutch/mound, so we trekked along the edge of the dam run-off only to discover that it was an over turned tree. We decided to trek up the hill to the trail instead of working our way back along the water's edge.

We were out for a couple hours and we both got hot a couple times. I had actually left one 'layer' at home. But all in all a good couple hours and miles of hiking. Our mph went down just a little, mostly due to having to choose our footing with much more care than normal. What a workout trekking through all that stiff crunchy snow!

Lunch: Mrs J's homemade lentil stew! Yummy! That lady can cook! Plus half of a lowcarb bagel with chive creamcheese also compliments of Mrs J.

Supper: Baked chicken with french cut green beans and baby carrots.
My latest rice pudding recipe/experiment for dessert. French vanilla capuccino baked brown rice pudding. Not bad....still have to tweak the recipe a bit. *Will I ever get the recipe 'just right'?

**Tuesday is normally my leg day, but I decided that since we put in a vigorous hike today that I will do my leg day tomorrow instead of taking my 'mid week' rest day.

Bleck! It snowed overnight and now we have freezing rain coming down! So now the great debate...do I remove the mess on my truck now or wait a bit and hope it 'flakes' off when I try to remove it in another hour or so? Still no FedEx delivery! I hope the heck they didn't get lost again and dump my order off somewhere wild again. *Sigh

Breakfast: Had my coffee and then a half hour later my shredded wheat with rice milk.
+AM supps

Lunch: Turkey and provolone on a 'flatout' tomato basil wrap with honey mustard.

I ran downtown so I could mail out some books to Australia and stop in to see Nancy at GoNE. She didn't open up today! She probably figured who the heck will be out in freezing rain. Only me!

The lack of sunlight is getting to me again. We just have not had enough sun to keep my SAD at bay. I came home and crashed for two hours. I woke to the mail lady with my books from Amazon. I went back to sleep for another half hour and woke in time to make supper for Joe...and the FedEx guy got here...but with my black and gray Stonehenge papers! No pencils yet! Oh well, I'm darkening the color contrasts and doing fine detail work with what I have.

Supper: I wasn't hungry at all...so I didn't eat with Joe, I had a MRS about two hours later. Not ideal, but better than nothing at all.

Legs:
BB squats 3 sets - 8 reps
BB SLDL 1 set - 10 reps
Ham curls 1 set - 10 reps
Leg extensions 1 set - 20 reps

*I somehow or another pinched a nerve in my drawing hand along the outside of my wrist. So I've had to adjust my grip on my pencils. I dug out my magnet wrist band and I'm wearing it. For some reason if I wear it for a day or so it helps relieve the strain from working long hours at my art. I better dig out my wrist brace too. I may have a bit of carpel tunnel. I haven't had trouble since I quit driving front-nose busses. But I also have been putting in a lot of hours in my studio.

Oh blah! What an awful day! It's foggy, dark, cold and damp. I ran out to South Hadley today to see if they could order the parts to convert my soapstone woodstove in to a coal stove. It was made between 1981-1989 and the company no longer produces that style. So we can't convert the stove. I don't heat with wood anymore due to my asthma. So I have a gorgeous soapstone stove sitting in my greatroom that I don't use. What a bummer.

Breakfast: Shredded wheat with rice milk and my coffee.
*Forgot my supps in my rush to get out the door and run errands before the roads freeze up again.

Lunch: Chocolate Hazelnut butter on wheat bread.
*I'm really not hungry again today. It was something quick before I crashed for a nap. Nancy still wasn't in her shop when I went back through town. At 1:30 my SAD kicked in and all I wanted to do was sleep. So I did. My wrist and thumb are killing me today. I dug out my heavy duty brace and am dutifully wearing it. The last time my carpel tunnel acted up my doctor wanted me to have surgery. No thank you! I have had about enough of operating rooms and 'simple' surgeries to last a lifetime!

Supper: Pork loin roast with corn and spinach.
*Miracle of miracles...I actually wanted to eat tonight. I'll have to have a MRS though...I'm down a bit too low on my calorie count for the day.

Shoulders & Triceps
Taking a break today...I can't 'grip' with my right hand spasming so badly. I'll give it a shot tomorrow, I upped my Yucca dosage, it may take a day or so before I see the swelling go down enough so I can lift without shooting pain in my wrist and hand.

That lunch item sounds really tasty!

Sorry to hear you're feeling "down," and that's a real bummer about the hand spasms! Get well soon.

It was actually! It was also one of those 'try and tempt the tastebuds' things. I really am terrible about eating this time of year. I'm suspecting that my SAD somehow suppresses my appetite. For most SAD signals carb cravings, my fibro does that to me from time to time so it can be a double whammy...but most often when my SAD hits I'm never hungry and I have to be a bit more diligent about eatingl Not easy when all I want to do is sleep when there is no sunshine to fuel my energy levels. I even have full spectrum lighting in my studio to help keep me going.

One of the ways doctors have SAD patients fight the symptoms is to sit in front of a full spectrum light box for a few hours a day. I compromised on that with my doctor by putting in full spectrum lighting. When the sun comes out this time of year and I've been too weakened from lack of sunshine I bundle up and sit out on my front porch in my rocking chair.

Thanks for the healing well wishes. Wrist is still in a brace. I managed to 'tweak' it again this morning feeding my horse and pony. It'll heal up soon enough. (Positive thinking here on my part!)

*Long Hike Day!
Well, it's pouring out and my woods are flooded, which means the trails are flooded. So Mrs J and I have hit upon a unique solution! We are going mall walking at Ingleside Mall up in Holyoke, MA. Three floors with stairs and Eastern Mountain Sports! An outdoorsy person's dream store! We are going to try on backpacks since we'll be needing new back packs for our overnight backpack excursions this coming year!
Stay tuned...this could be interesting. I'm not a 'mall' person but I really don't want to miss my long hike. We are heading to the Museum Quadrangle in Springfield after our 'mall walk'.

Breakfast: Coffee and my shredded wheat in rice milk.

Musings from the Mall:
Well, this proved to be really interesting! We got in nearly two miles and did the stairs a few times. We had to navigate around people going much slower than we were going at 3+ mph. I had tried not to over dress, but still started to over heat. Which was rather funny as so many around us had winter jackets on. After looping around the mall and up and down the stairs a couple times we decided to go check out backpacks and equipment at Eastern Mountain Sports. (EMS.com)

So for the first time since I was a teen I was measured for a backpack! I knew I would measure small since I have a short torso...I measured for extra-small! Mrs J measured in for a small, she also has a short torso, albiet not as short as me! (I have longer legs so we found this all rather amusing.)

The backpack we wanted to try on wasn't in stock any smaller than a medium so we tried on a couple that EMS puts out for women. I fell in love with the:
EMS Summit 4500.

I cannot believe how backpacks have evolved over the past 27 years! I was in heaven! We also checked out tents and sleeping bags and then headed up to the second floor where the books and maps were located. I picked up another book and map: North Berkshire Outdoor Guide. Mrs J and I want to do more of Mt Greylock next year (As well as Mt. Monadnock.) so now we can plan which trail head to take. We also both picked up a copy of Hiking & Backpacking - A Trailside Guide to help in the planning of our overnight trips we have planned this coming summer up to the Race Brook Falls area.

After spending over an hour in EMS we headed to Barnes & Noble for coffee and lunch and then back to the Springfield Quadrangle Museums. We had time for the science museum and planetarium and barely enough time to go through the Connecticut Valley museum. We are seriously thinking of a yearly membership since it covers museums all over the North East. We had a great day.

Lunch: Turkey and cheddar wrap with a carmel fudge brownie and white chocolate mocha. Total splurge!

Supper: The rest of my wrap. I'll eat again later, but I'm not hungry right now for a full meal.

Cold and partly cloudy today...but no freezing rain! My hands and wrists are feeling better today. I think the extra Yucca is finally kicking in. I'm going to take the weekend off completely and start back with my normal lifting on Monday. I want the swelling down completely before I start again.

My pencils finally got here! So I'm hoping I can finish my pencil painting over the weekend. Of course when I went through town last night Nancy was in her shop and I was too tuckered out to stop in. I'll have to try and catch her later next week.

I'm two-thirds of the way through my new hiking/backpacking book and I spent a good part of last night researching camping hammocks. I want to purchase one and hang it in my backyard in the spring and give it a try for a couple nights. I like the idea of camping in a hammock verses a tent. I think it will save my back.
About camping hammocks.
The hammock I'm interested in.

*I'll be back to post on Monday.

Yahoo! Bright and sunny today...albeit a bit cold! We got about an inch of snow last night. We are supposed to get more today. My brace is off! I took it off yesterday and haven't had any spasms. So I'm going to go back to my Monday routine today and see how my wrist stands up to lifting.

Breakfast: Shredded wheat in rice milk.
+AM supps. Had my coffee a half hour before breakfast to clear my lungs.

Lunch: Veggie quiche with an extra slice of provolone melted on top.

Supper: Meatloaf with petite green peas and corn.

Chest & Biceps:
Chest:
DB flat bench press 3 sets - 8 reps
DB incline bench press 2 set - 10 reps
DB decline bench press 1 set - 20 reps
Biceps:
EZbar curls 2 sets - 8 reps
EZb reverse curls 1 set - 8 reps
DB alternating hammer curls 2 sets - 10 reps
DB alternating curls 1 set 20 reps
*Only a little bit of a twinge in my wrist and thumb...my workout went smoothly.

Post w/o shake: Vanilla 100% whey in lemon-lime gatorade.

Well it's looking like no 'short' hike tomorrow, the wind chill and temps are nasty. I just blanketed my old horse for the night for the first time all winter. Not sure what I'll do tomorrow. Probably do some more reading about the latest in backpacking equipment and get some more done on my preliminary sketches on my workboard.

And before I forget:

Holey smokes it's cold outside! I readjusted ole Stony man's blanket for him when I went out to feed he and little miss Shinook. Anakin went out with me while I fed the equine crew and he was more than happy to book back to the house without meandering around the yard first today.

The wild birds are already at the feeders. I'm out of suet cakes for them. I'll have to pick some up on the way back from the city. (Michele needs a ride into school today.) The little critters need all the help they can get staying warm.

It
