I am now convinced that my foot issues will be with me until the tourney! Basicly, I am not able to do roundhouse kicks effectively with my right (my power) foot. Which, as Bulk knows, is the main kick for scoring in tournaments. My foot placement has to be perfect when I make contact or shooting pain runs up my foot to my heel! I can do all the other kicks without an issue since the damage appears to be the right toes. In the tournament, I will use my roundhouse kicks sparringly and try to mask my discomfort.

Did 10 minutes of skipping rope between classes for cardio. In the night class, there were only 3 students; Me, my son, and our 3rd Dan Black Belt. Our instructor worked us on sparring techniques when breaking a "clinch" and 3 counters. All of the counters were combination kicks which started from either a clinch or side step. I had to ice my right foot again when I got home. Popped a few Motrin and slept a couple hours before I went to work.

Thanks for thinking of me! I KNOW! I have H.I.I.T. in the am outside at the track! I think I will be sharing space with Penquins! Since we are back in our Dojang, I may stop by there first and work on my form and jump rope too! We shall see. Got my hoodie ready...

Thanks Cammo and HammerTech!
Well it was only 42 degrees this am so it was not that cold.

Warmed up by running 2 miles this morning - 16 minutes. Then went for H.I.I.T.

15 minutes total

Sprint the straights
Jogged the curves.

The warmup was the hardest to get used to. I have not run in air that cool in years. The first 1/2 mile my chest was burning but I soon hit a pace and found my lungs. I was pushing every straight run as hard as I could. This is my last "outdoor" training session until the tournament. I am thinking of just doing cardio work every day this week. I may hit the gym for a full body workout but I really want to make sure the cardio is up to snuff. My recovery from the sprints has improved greatly. My heart rate was about 154 after the sprint and by the time I got to the next straight, it had dropped to 118. I do not own a Heart Rate Monitor so I was using the corotid pulse as a guide. Rather tough while jogging so take the numbers with a grain of salt. The biggest thing is that although I am huffing and puffing after the sprint. I am breathing easily around the turns.

I plan to jump rope for 10 minutes each day between TKD classes this week. I also will do 5 x 3 minute rounds on these Monday/Wednesday/ and Friday: Hope it will be enough:

Okay... Yesterday was an "off" day (President's Day) and I was off too. I got some 5 hours sleep which is almost double what I normally get on Mondays. I helped out with the After School Program with the kids and worked on dialing in my Form for the competition. I have the pattern down, just need to make it "tight".

I did 10 minutes of jump roping after the kids class and before the evening class. While doing the evening class I felt a small twinge in my lower abs again while doing the old legs 6" off the floor, in a V-sit, and moving the legs in and out! Damn! As if I needed something else to worry about. I can not sprint now but I can do all my kicks and I am able to spar. (whew). Only bothers me when I try to sprint. If I run or jog, no issues! ????

Last night was our last Sparring class before the tournament. I went 20 minutes with various opponents. I taped my rt foot and that seemed to help a bit. I even hit a few elbows with it. Though it stung for a moment, it did not hinder me from kicking! I did another 10 minutes of jump rope between classes and I was breathing just fine within 1 minute of stopping and only got tangled in the rope 5 times! Woo Hoo! I may hit the gym in the am for a few basic lifts:
Bench
Weighted Pull Ups
Military Press
Squats (see how my lower ab thing feels)

Just want to make sure everything is primed and ready for Saturday! As for me sparring, that decision will be made on Saturday. I feel I have put in the training, the sparring, the preparation, and I certainly feel, right now, that I can go. The only thing that will stop me is my body saying "Nope! Not this time!" I would feel cheated if I don't compete in sparring so right now, I am 90% sure I will compete.

Default 3 Gold and one Silver!

Well it's over! My son took Gold in Forms and Silver in sparring. Unfortunately, he ran into "The Bully"! The kid my son drew has been to several tournaments that we have gone to and really is a bully. His parents, both Latino, egg him on by yelling in Spanish: KILL HIM! RIP HIS HEAD OFF! and the like (nice to have learned Spanish as a child from my best friend who is Argentinian so I know what the parents were saying). The last time one of students sparred this kid, the Bully knocked down our fighter and stood over him growling! Fists raised and glaring at our fighter like a lunatic. My son had pitched a shut out until this "Bully" hit my son in the throat. Not legal at all but if the ref doesn't see it??? Of course my son, 9, started crying and so he took second. His pride was wounded and he now says he will not spar in tournaments. We shall see...

My first tournament and I took two Gold. Forms and Sparring. There was nobody in my age category for the Forms so that was a pass. In sparring, again, no body in my age/belt category so I drew a Wu Shu kid, 17 years old. He was very linear in his attacks and by using angles, I was able to beat him quite easily. I did send him flying with a really nice turning back kick! Man that felt good! No damage done and I did not even think about my aching feet or abdomin. Adrenaline is so cool :unibrow: Overall, we raped the tournament with all of students getting most of the Gold that was available. A good time was had by all, except my son. Woo Hoo! Celebrated with family meal @ Outback Steakhouse. Had a nice 9ox filet, house salad w/ honey-mustard dressing, a baked potato with chives and bit of chedder cheeese, and some green tea! Not really a "cheat meal" but definitly a treat.

Awesome, narcsarge....congrats on your accomplishment bud!

Congrats to your son as well for his gold and silver medals. Sorry that he ran into the "bully" as he did and given a day or two after the fact, maybe he'll bounce back from what happened. In any event he did a great job too.

I remember the first time I got in the throat, I swore I would never fight again cause I thought I had a near death experience. I wasn't fighting with gloves either but one thing I can tell you....that "sworn oath" I took with myself was broken at the next opportunity. Hormones, ego and the healing process of time usually come into play when deciding you're going to fight again. I remember the first sparring match I had, I got hit in the kidneys and that wasn't the most pleasant feeling. I still managed to stay up and not drop my knee even though I wanted to extremely bad but there was only 20 seconds left in the round so I decided to duke it out.

MAN, I hate getting hit.

I'm sure your son is going to make a quick recovery from that experience. He's young anyways so experiences like that are most likely going to be blown out of proportion in his mind anyways so I don't think you should worry much. It's like you said, "We'll see...". I'm glad he still got second and I'm glad you "raped" the tournament along with your son. How humble of a statement from you narc J/K

Seems like you're doing well. Keep up the good work. I'm STILL waiting on my punching bag to start my training! I'm getting a little antsy + angry right now but all in due time and all is well...

"We'll see.."

F.Y.I. Dannyboy, I did not come up with the term "raping" the tournament! That was used by our 3rd Dan! LOL he is 17 so you can admire his use of the language! Here's some photos for Jim and the BB4U shirt owners!

My sparring partner! 3rd Dan and 17 years old. This is the Instructor for our After School Program:

Yes danny I know. I like the work I feel on my shoulders and the stretch in my pecs. I get a better "feel" when doing cable crossovers but I don't get the nice stretch and shoulder work. Now that I am not worried about competing TKD it is back to basics. I will only use "finishing" exercises rarely once I am back to lifting heavy. Thanks for keeping me honest!

Thanks Weeee! I will, I will, I will!
