A big loss for the UFC as one of it's most "colorful" personalities is found dead in a California desert.
Yahoo Sports RIP Evan Tanner. Your spirit will be missed.

I am stunned. He was a veteran warrior of the UFC and no matter even in his losses he got my respect as he went at it with anyone, never backed down.
This is sad..He is crazy for doing what he did, but I dont think he knew the risks completely that he was taking. I realize what he said on his blog, but i take it like driving on a canyon road and looking over the edge out of the window of your car and telling your passenger "If we move over 3 more feet we are going to plummet 300 feet to our death"..I think the driver obviously knows the risks of driving on a canyon road, but he also trusts his driving ability to make it out alive and therefore he rarely thinks of the outcome of "what can happen"....I think Tanner was doing the same thing, he trusted his survival skills and equipment that he'd make it and unfortunately he did not. Big mistake, major lack of judgment and unfortunately someone has to lose a son, someone has to lose a brother, someone has to lose a friend and the UFC has to lose a veteran warrior. The California desert is no joke. I personally know someone who died out there motorcycle riding myself. I worked with him and his brother (we sold motorcycles). He was with his brother, but his bike broke down out there (Mojave Desert) and without water he rapidly started showing signs of dehydration. His brother couldnt hold him on his bike as he tried to get him to the nearest ranger station, but he fell off a few times and broke his arm on the last fall. His brother decided to leave him under a big cactus in the shade (major mistake). He left for the ranger and by the time he returned it was 2.5 hours later and his brother was dead. If you go out in the desert, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN OVERABUNDANT SUPPLY OF WATER!!!! It will save your life! You can go weeks out there without food, but you wont last a single day without water. Evan Tanner - RIP, may you be with GOD |

I think the brother who died, actually crashed and thats how the bike broke down, I think he was already suffering the heatstroke effects and that caused the crash. The heat is no joke out there in the California Desert, the Mojave routinely gets over 115 degrees. But so sad for thhe brother who left him as he has to live a lifetime with what happened. I personally dont want to judge him, but I think he made a major mistake by leaving the brother. He should have found a way to keep him on his bike to get him there...Hindsight is 20/20, but this would torment me for life |

Ok I was about to comment on Tanners death that my opinion was not a lack of Gas, but a lack of Water is what ultimately led to his death.
And it's turns out to be true. Tanner didnt run out of gas, those reports are false. Instead, he simply underestimated how much water he'd need for a 10 mile round trip hike. At his base camp, he had additional provisions, it was his trek to 5 miles out that killed him. He texted a friend of this and said he had planned to travel back at night during colder hours. They discovered his body only 1.2 miles from his camp! This was just posted 3 hours ago More on Evan Tanner's*Death - Bloody Elbow |

Well that definately clears some stuff up, shame that he was so close to his base camp. I still think he should have texted his friend to send help as soon as he ran out of water instead of trying to survive the hike back, at least thats what I would do if I was hiking through the desert.

He could have said he was at the spot where he was since they already know where it is, he should stayed put, waited for them to come and he might have had a shot. I'm a amature Paleontologist (I dig up fossils in my spare time) I have been in the middle of the Mojave, out near Death Valley where it's 120 degree's on the average summer day, but I always, ALWAYS have brought along about 4-5 times the amount of water I'd need out there. Often I'd not need it, but I always know the importance. I always bring plenty of electrolytes too, like Gatorade. A mixture of 50/50 water and gatorade is best actually. I'd do like Bear Grillis from that survivor show, I'd piss in my shirt and ring it out and drink it for more water...There are also desert plants that harbor a bit of water in them, but of course all this is easy to say from my nice office chair in my nice air conditioned building. |
