Default Which Martial Art To Go Into?

So this is my first year without playing football since 1995 and it's killing me. I miss the competitivness and "violence" of it, Im playing touch football and it doesnt work for me.

I've been intersted in MMA for some years and am interested in training and eventually fighting. So my question is: Which martial art should I start to train in?

I know that you need to be well rounded in order to be a good fighter but I currently dont have the resources(cash) to learn more than one discipline at a time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Muay Thai will take you pretty far, but you'll still need to learn some sort of ground game.

Yea, I've been leaning towards Muay Thai, I wrestled a bit in high school so I have some background in grappling (although it's been four years since high school).

thanks for the suggestions

I wrestled all 4 years of high school, and if you remember any of it, you'll form a good base. Those guys are pros and would trash me, but half their shots are terrible. It all depends on what you want to end up "specializing" in ie: striking, ground and pound etc. I'm using my wrestling as a base but I'm really starting to get into Muay Thai and working on it daily and I feel I've already come a long way. Too bad it will be nigh impossible for me to get any real fight experience near my location. Goodluck to you bro, any questions feel free to PM me.

I do Taekwon Do and this subject comes up daily. First off:

1. What are your goals? Self Defense? Fitness? Sparring? Grappling? Take Downs? Weapons? Kata?

2. What schools are nearby?

3. Do you have previous MA experience. You mentioned you used to wrestle so something like Brazilian Jujitsu, Judo, or Jujitsu might be something you will take to quickly.

4. Go to different schools at different times and watch them. Don't fall for hype. Most schools will let you take a free class or 2 w/out obligation. Make sure that you are not looking at a belt factory. A school with a thousand pre-teen Black Belts would trouble me.

5. Discuss w/ the Master/Instructor what your goals are and what you are looking for. Try not to get roped into long term contracts. Some schools are cheaper if you pay for a year up front but allow you to leave or suspend your membership.

Look around and test drive a few schools and styles. Find a school you are comfortable with and suits your needs.

If you want to compete, then you should start with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That is extremely hard to learn and become proficient. It will take years of dedication to become dangerous. As for the Muay Thai, you could study that art for 6 months and be ready to compete, especially if you have a great ground game. Most fights are won or lost on the ground.

I would take some Judo classes as well. I love watching those guys get thrown on their heads.

I received a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and am now doing Judo, mix and match ground fighting and striking. Since you have a wrestling background take some Muay Thai.
