Per Big Sean's request.........
Here's my best find ever. It's a 15 million year old Shark tooth (a rare find at 3 inches long). It came from an extinct Mako shark, somewhere around 20 to 25 feet long....yes, thats correct, 20 to 25 feet long. Just looking at this tooth is scary and it's still sharp as a razor to this day. Some experts say this Mako is what evolved into our modern day Great White. I dug it up in Bakersfield, in the Sharktooth Hill area. ![]() Here's some various whale and dolphin bones. The large piece I am holding is a lower Rib bone from a HUGE whale, probably a Sperm Whale (same time period from the Miocene era, about 15 million yrs old) ![]() I dug these teeth up on the same dig. These are all around 1 to 2 inches long. These are from the species of extinct Mako Shark, 15 million years old. BTW, the black substance is Oil, Bakersfield has a huge deposit of oil underneath it's surface. ![]() I believe this was one day of finds. The pics not a good one, but you get the idea. ![]() I have many, many better examples of fossils I have found, but these are the only ones I have uploaded to my computer. I found this old thread too, these are more marine fossils from the Miocene era My hobby ~ Fossil collecting - See pics |

I have donated some to her school and she has had various reports and "share days" where she has taken them to school with her. I have only taken her to a few spots to dig for herself, mostly because the spots I go to require strong footing to get there and then there are other various hazards to look out for such as Rattlesnacks, Scorpions, etc..etc.. On one occasion, there was a crevace/hole on the side of a hill I was digging in, I stumpled up to it, looked in and right there are eye level, all coiled back, was a Diamond back Rattlesnack. I am talking like 1 foot from my face!!!! I havent been out in well over a year, but sure man, I'll hit you up the very next time I go. |

Hey Sean
Are you close to Highway 180 West? They recently found some Mammoth fossils and extinct Camel fossils, during the building of the extension of the Highway....LOL yes, they had Camels in America at one time, in fact, this is where they originate from if I am correct. Anyways, you finding a mammoth would be like hitting the lottery, and you'd destroy the bones trying to get them out, but, you can find teeth with much more luck and ease. A Mammoth tooth is worth alot of money too ($100 to $500). If I lived in your area I'd search around this spot for teeth Here's a few ![]() ![]()

Well the chances are when they graded that specific spot, they pretty much got everything. Plus all the amatuer paleontologists would have been out there as well. But, in the surrounding area's you may still be able to go hunting and find stuff....Then it again, it does take a trained eye even for the stuff lying on the surface. |
