Angry Car troubles AGAIN

More car troubles.

Just wanna see if anyone knows what could be wrong. Its going to the shop tonight.

My heat is working, but my front window fogs up BIG time when I put the defrost on. Plus there is this weird smell, sort of like burn, but not really. No burning smoke coming out of nowhere, except there is a cold smoke that comes into the car when I turn on the defrost. GRRRR

I checked under the hood and no smoke or stench.

Any ideas what it could be?

If you have conditioned air! Maybe there is no Freon left.

The reason your window doesnt steam under normal conditions is because when you turn it(heat) to front window, it turns on the air conditioner compressor so it pulls the humidity out of the air its throwing at the window. Could be a problem with your air conditioning compressor and the smell could be the belt. Just a guess. At any rate, have it looked at. If your compresser is fooked and you have a serpentine belt and it breaks, itll leave you stranded.

Possibly a leaking heater core? Does your heat take a long time to heat up?

I would definitely have it looked at ASAP. If that core blows up, it's going to make quite a dangerous mess.

I would have to agree here with Keyhole. Does it smell like a "sweet" burn? Swipe your finger against the "fog" err whatever it is and smell it, it if smells semi sweet or has a color to it that is coolant and there is a hole in your heater core.

Depending on what kind of car you have it can be a few hundred bucks to fix. My fist car (88 mustang) had a hole in the heater core and they had to take out the ENTIRE dashboard and it ended up costing me 400.00.

Good luck!

Thanks Kids.. called the mechanic and he said its either the heater coil or hose.

Its blowing heat and the air too,... its a mess. I need a new car..

At any rate, the serpentine belt was replace in August, so i think that should be ok.

Will check back in with you kittens to let you know the outcome.

If it does end up being the heater core I suggest calling corporate VW and complaining.

My girlfriends heater core blew up last winter while we were in her 1992 VW GTI. We called VW, told them what happened and they covered the repair 100% in full even though it was a 14 year old car that was long out of warranty. VW takes heater core issues very seriously.

You can try the customer care number at 1-800-822-8987

Good luck!

Brownish red would be dirty antifreeze since VW's use G12 (red coolant). It's a good thing if it is outside the car, that means it's a hose/radiator. If the carpet inside the car was wet, it would be the heater core.

Well actually I am quite the VW fanatic...you can check out my 450hp Jetta here

Dub Werks | Sponsored Ride

Unfortunately I don't think a dealer will be very willing to help you, the work order will probably have to come from VW corporate.

Tell VW customer care that the heater core is leaking inside the car and dripped hot fluid on your foot. Tell them you are afraid to drive the car because you heard these things can blow up. Right away you should be able to tell if the guys cares or not. The guy I spoke with seemed genuinely concerned and said he would check into having VW cover the repair. If they don't offer to cover the repair, straight out tell them you expect them to fix it.

Oh and if the first guy you get doesn't seem to care, hang up and get someone else.

Good luck!
