Default My pitchers

Ok, I know I miss the hobby thread last month but oh well.

How I got started: My family lives across the state. And a couple years ago they decided my grandmother needed to go into an old folks home. My mother kept telling me on the phone what her sisters had done to her house rummaging thru and cherry picking thru the things her and my grandfather had collected over their 60 years in their home. This was so dis-heartening to me as Id always hope I would get to have a piece of her for keepsake.

Well at christmas that year I took the key to the grandma's house from my mother and went to the house. As I opened the door the tears rolled down my face. In the middle of the living room floor was a giant mound of garbage.
They had trashed her home...our home. ( Im starting to tear up now) It was so sad to me all the memories, seemed to mean nothing to these geedy biitches.

I spent about three hours trying to find something left, and trying to clean up what they had done. Anything to remember my grandparents, Something to hand down to my daughter. But there was nothing. I had almost given up when I was leaning against the wall in the hall crying over days gone by I looked up and caught a glimps of the attic door. And the thought cross my mind " those women are to effin fat to get up there" So I grab a ladder and headed up with all the hope I had left. Low and behold the only thing up there were two boxes, covered in dust and barely holding together.

And that was the begining, grandma gave me my start with about 50 miniture pitchers all wrapped in newspaper. Since then I buy a couple each month at yard sales, flee markets, and ebay. Now I have about 120 of them and love each and every one!

Awww KT, that sucks that you had to go through that. My mom caught a couple of my uncle's wives trying to go through my grandma's stuff just before she went into a nursing home. Luckily my grandma lived in an apartment above my parents so my parents were able to lock everything up and leave it locked until my grandma died a few years late. And then her 7 surviving kids got together and peacefully sorted out through her stuff.

We were pretty ticked off to find my aunts (Not even her own kids!) going through her stuff...while she was napping in the other room to boot! Some people are completely without morals.

I'm so glad you were able to find your grandma's miniature pitcher collection.

BTW...my grandmother collected cats! She had a couple 'cat' teapots! My family gave me some of my grandmother cats. That was pretty cool.

that smallest one is something. *cough* "cute" *cough*

you should take all of them to America's Antique Road Show to see the value of any of them.

What a wonderfully touching story KT! **Seasons Greetings**

I love all the collectibles as my wife just received a comic "Penquin" Punch bowl! Her Mom just opened a rather 'high-end' store that sells such unique (hell I call it tacky) stuff! But because of the help my wife gave for the Grand Opening, she was given this silly looking, but really expensive, bunch bowl. I am sure the memories associated with your collection will be what gives them value to you and your family.

One thing Ive learned about collecting these pitchers is it seem the gawtier they are the more valuable. Ive seen some super ugly stuff go for big bucks.

You use it for milk. The milk pours out of the beak.

Here is one like what we have.
