i'm absolutely clueless when it comes to programming. I should have taken computer science in high school, so i wouldn't be worried about taking it in college. I need to learn some languages for the sake of beeing able to keep my job with everyone now learning computer languages

I'm a sys / netadmin, but I do some freelance programming on the side (there was a short period I was a full time dev, but I got tired of it) I detest Visual basic and I loath Java. LOL Visual basic teaches programmers bad habits in my opninon. But if I get started on that, I'll finish writing by the second coming. .Java..eugh..very bloated. It's nice to know it since you can land a job relatively easily. I like how the object refrences are done. However, what I can't stand for is using the guise of "portability" for the bloat of the virtual machine. C++ I like very much.:P As for what other languages I know (but haven't written in while) Pyhton C Ruby Perl Lisp

Oops yeah my Visual Basic is .NET Vb, should'uve mentioned that.
theara, go learn a language! lol Mind you, I know alot of self-taught programmers. Just get a good book and your set for the most part. I find it funny that people think programming is easy. Just connect words with words and you have a program... Easier said than done.

What area? I'm an engineer as well......
Sorry guys, but I detest most developers.......they all think they know everything about the friggin' network and server architecture yet write bloated ass progs with very little testing, many missing features from a user perspective, and an absolute nightmare from a server admin/security engineer point of view.

i used to b heavy in computers, i had dabbled around with 14 languages up to one point..just basic syntax and basic scripts etc. IMO, once u know one, u know them all...hell, computer security is how i get interested in philosophy (long story, so i wont bother ).i like perl, c++, think java's crap, dont mind php, used to know a little python. but what u should b doing is some assembly...i think i started to try and learn that ****... have a look at some sample code if u can find it...its old-school, takes longer to code, but atleast u have better control on how it works through the system i leave all this stuff alone now, kinda wish i still had the time to take it up again .

Platform you mean? At the moment (to my great sadness) we're running Server 2k3. My previous employer was running (Free)BSD. I've admin'd on a lot of platforms..The only one I haven't had the pleasure yet to try out is Mac. Even did some old school stuff like OS/400. On occasion I did some pen-testing, so I feel your pain jlozan.. A question to all of you fellow nerds (hah!) Has anyone taken a CCIE Lab recently? What was your experiance with it? (Sorry for hijacking your thread Virus. )
