i've been reading some of the past threads and people often mention that when they started they were making 'beginners mistakes'. i've read the list of principles of training, what are the mistakes that you guys actually made, and were they on this list? what is the most common mistake a beginner can make?

Another mistake is stocking up and stacking with supplements. When you're new to SERIOUS and DEDICATED weight lifting, supplements are a waste to newbies because they don't know the difference. It's like getting being born into wealthiness......you don't know how good it is to have money unless you're poor before you're rich. Just like with supplements, you really can't measure the difference b/w being training w/supplements vs. not because you have nothing to compare to. The best and most common advice we always give newbies here is to EAT GOOD, LIFT HARD and SLEEP WELL. After you've made some gains following that routine, THEN it's time to start sneaking in a supplement here or there to better your progress even more. I personally can vouch for making the mistakes of becoming infatuated with supplements myself. After trial and error and tons of money wasted, I realized I just need to eat right and do the rest I said above and I'll be O.K.

newbs generally overtrain or train too hard, and also have a bad diet - they grow anyway so it takes a while for them to figure out whats wrong also one of the biggest mistakes made is to not moisturise the skin (while having a diet consisting of no vits / mins) an flex all day - this causes stretch marks Last edited by _SaVvY_; 05-08-2006 at 05:36 AM. |

I'll throw my suggestion in that hurt me a little when I first started. I didn't focus on my diet as much as I did my lifting. I had a very good routine, noticing some good gain, but when I look back, if my diet had bee much better, those gains could have doubled. Anyone can lift a weight, but it takes dedication to control, maintain, and plan your meals in advance.

noobs think that more weight = more muscle quicker
and they start to swing the weights than actually use good form. Diet is another noob mistake, they dont realise that diet has a major impact on their growth

When I first started I lifted 6 days a week (whole body routines!) 2-3 hours a day and did cardio at the end of each workout! I drank at least a six pack of beer every night and only slept about 4 hours a night! I also thought that I didn't need to eat very much. My favorite is the old high reps with small weights "got you cut" and low reps with high weight "builds size". I totally believed that for a while...OVERTRAINING/ CATABOLISM/ TOOTHPICK TOWN HERE I COME!
Needless to say, I learned alot about how not to do things! Oh, how I wish I had done things right from the beginning!

1>They don't realize diet has the most impact on their training.
2>They believe their routine is better than one developed by a reputable and creditable trainer. 3>They overemphasize supplementation. 4>Lack of patience.

If i knew four years ago what i know now, i would be much better off. Diet is SO SO SO important. I rank it as the second most important thing in any fitness program. The first is commitment and dedication to follow through. I had no idea how important diet was until i started posting here, and its made a world of difference.
