I can see the gyms point in trying to create a non intimidating type of enviornment and it's their gym, so more power to them.
But you now what, when you are lifting some serious weight, it's only natural to let out a grunt. In fact, it might be the act itself that allows you to get over the hurdle and not fail in the lift attempt. I myself am fortunate to work out at home and I am glad. As I grunt, I scream, I yell, I even throw some plates some times - it all pumps me up..... Even after the big lift, I praise myself with a loud scream. But would I do this at a Planet Fitness or 24 Hour Fitness? Probably not, so thankfully I dont have to deal with it. My neighbors think I am a freak though |

I guess the fact that she has some 250lb Neanderthal types using her facility will be outlawed next as "someone" might find that to be a bit ... intimidating! Grrrrrrr!
F***ing P.C. culture!

I guess it depends on the defenition of grunt. I've already been lifting and someone grunted so loud and obnoxiously that it startled me mid lift. There is no need for a 120db grunt in a gym. Little grunt ok. If your into grunting then you need to go to that kind of gym and not a nice family, business person oriented gym. I think when your making noises that could startle people and possible make them jump, it becomes a liability for the gym.

Bottom line is, this sounds like a gym that makes it clear its a casually oriented setting. They dont want guys in there yelling and screaming and throwing plates around, because it will intimidate the demographic they appeal to. If you dont wanna deal with rules like that, join a real gym.
