Default The Curiosity Thread

I occasionally have alot of weird questions and probably not a good idea to start a thread for each of them, so this thread is where I and anyone can post their curiosity. So wise members, please, visit here sometimes and hopefully answer some of them. Also if anyone has any good/interesting information, post here as well, because we can all learn something new.

So here's what I'm asking

During the off season, lil sav, ronnie, priest, etc. are pretty "fat"(not really fat but you know what i mean). Usually what %body fat are they? and how come they don't have things like droopy fats, flaps? Their fats are actually looking really full/firm and shaped well. I see this with normal people as well, some have very drooping tummy, pudgy, but some has bulging out stomach that look like a balloon and hard.

Another one, which injury is worse, hit by a bullet or a ricochet (in the same spot). The reason i ask is, doesn't the bullet get deformed after it gets ricochet, so it would makes a bigger injury?

ONE MORE, lol, dog20, what is your rep point right now? does it go to negative? you asked me to neg rep you but i will save it for when you really deserve it

OMG...I knew there was a reason I like you because I have questions pop up in my head all the time! I used to have an entire book full of them. Whenever I had one pop into my mind, I would write it down.

Like why are there so many lugnuts on a tire? It would seem they could invent easier way to change tires after all these years? Or why are some roads concrete, but some are asphalt?

I kno how you feel .. i have so much and want to ask, but then i don't know where to ask, or how to search for it.
concrete and asphalt question is depending on the zone it is in. The expanding rate of concrete and asphalt are different. I think thats the reason. lol not fact

oh yea, just for the record.. state it as opinion if you're not sure it's a fact.. =P

if you get hit directly by the bullet from the gun it would cause more injury. once the bullet ricochets, it deforms and wont pentrate nearly as far. Although the puncture wound will be larger, it wont do as much internal damage. Getting hit directly is more lethal because the bullet pentrates your body deeper (sometimes exits the opposite side even depending upon caliber and powder charge), and as it penetrates it mushrooms inside of you, tearing apart internal organs.

this is assuming the shooter is using jhp (hollow tips)

btw...i was hit by a ricocheted .45 round one time at a range that came back at me and it did no more than merely cut my shin when it hit me.

what if you shoot a bullet in the air, when it comes down will the velocity be enough to actually kill someone?

Yeah, it should. The velocity of the bullet should be the same just as it hits the ground as when it left the gun. Things like air resistance would slow the bullet down a bit though.

There have been cases that this has happened, however on MythBusters they pretty much proved that it really won't happen.

Only in a vacuum would the velocity be the same. But since drag plays a factor, it would be nowhere close. If you fire a gun straight up in the air, at some point the bullet will come to a complete stop. So on the way down, the bullets velocity starts at zero. I read that on average a bullet fired vertically from a rifle will reach an average height of 9000 feet. So we can use this formula to figure out its impact velocity.

(vf^2) = (v0^2) + 2*a*(delta y)

vf is the velocity of the object when it hits the ground
(or final velocity)
vo is the object's original velocity
a is the acceleration due to gravity
delta y is how far it falls

vf^2 = (0) + 2*(32 ft/sec^2)*(9000 ft)

vf^2 = 73600 ft^2 / sec^2

now take the square root of vf^2 to get vf...

vf = 758ft/sec

Most rifles have a muzzle velocity of over 3000 ft/sec so you can see thats quite a bit less.

But wait a minute, that formula doesnt take into consideration terminal velocity. Bullets come in many different sizes and shapes but on averge, the terminal velocity is between 300 and 400ft/sec. About the same velocity as a bb gun. So its still dangerous but nowhere near as dangerous as the original shot.
