I've recently tried shaving "down there" to have that smoooth/clean feel. Plus I'll be competeing soon and don't want anything showing. But it grows back quite fast, itches like mad and I get like razor burn. How does everyone else (guys/girls) accomplish this without the nasty side effects?

Try searching for shaving! Or,
Favorite Hair Removal Product I personally use good old fashion shaving cream and razor. I shave daily and that seems to help with the ingrown hairs. I get an occasional bump now and then but nothing like I used to.

No reason to be. Unless you are competing or a swimmer by trade, a man has no need to be shaving down there. Oh, and I dont like my women shaved either.
