termites
Anyone had termites in their house? I had some rotten wood at the bottom of the back door that I tore out. I thought it was just water damage because it was'nt sealed properly. I noticed some holes in the wood I tore out and left them out on the concrete a couple days. The other day there was a swarm of bugs around the damaged wood. They looked like ants but some had wings and were black and there was also some red ants mixed in with them. My gf says this is serious and I need an inspection and probly a tent put over the house and spray or fogger. The problem is I can't afford anything like that as I'm going back to school and just had a 2-week layoff. Are there any sprays or anything that I could do myself? There is still some bad wood at the bottom of the door, but my dad says to just put a new piece in there and paint it as I can't afford to tear it out and redo it all.
PS: I also plan on selling the house in about a year...

You probably have the termites in a lot of other places too. Yes, its serious. Those are some nasty critters. I dont think you can treat it as well as a professional exterminator can.
I dont think you can hide a termite infection from an appraiser if and when you plan on selling it. I believe they inspect a home pretty good to see if there are any problems like that. Good luck.

I did some research on termites and ants and think they may be carpenter ants. If thats what it is its not as serious. They seem to like moist wood and I see alot of them on the trees around the house. Some of the trees are dying and I have been putting the branches around the foundation, which probly was'nt a good idea. The ones I saw by the back door were smaller though. I'll still call an exterminator and see what they think.
