Most guys who visit this site probably don't use personal trainers.
If you know your stuff, you shouldn't really worry about what your clients think - If they don't have faith in you, they won't use you.
If they take your advice & encouragement and make the gains they're looking for, they have no reason to doubt you.
I did a gym instructing course a few years back and was going to follow it through to personal training but the personal training addition was the same as the gym instructing apart from advice on running a company etc - I already know how to run a company so flagged it.
I personally would get my info from a gym instructor - they deal with more people on a day to day basis (unless the personal trainer had spent a good amount of time on the floor as an instructor previously).

I take it you also train?
I have seen a couple of really fat personal trainers at my gym (men & women) and if I was looking for a trainer wouldn't give them the time of day!
Practice what you preach I say!

I wouldn't care what the trainer was, as long as they knew what heck they were talking about and were helping me toward my goals.

I would be cautious with a female personal trainer b/c women seem to have a softer approach to training. That said, if she were some militaristic chisled chick then I'd have no problem with her.

Given the choice, I'd choose someone whose physique is similar to what I want.

Don't forget, the people who use personal trainers tend to be ppl just starting out or ppl with more money than will power. Older men are probably willing to pay $$$ to hang out with a younger fit female regardless of the activity.

I think female trainers do have a softer approach but i think its the clients responsibility to say "hurt me" and let them know they want to be given a tough workout, especially if they are female.

Being female myself, i have seen the difference - if i come right out and say "i need someone to kick my a$$ - and that is what i am paying you for" - they get the idea! otherwise i get 5 lbs dumbells and elastic bands.

my hockey team about 2 and a half years ago got a trainer.. i pretty much knew no excersizes or how to perform them and they bring in this female personal trainer and she taught us a **** load in about 3 days.. so in my experience it doesnt matter if your a woman or man.. if you know your stuff then youll get clients, i personally dont see the need for a personal trainer unless you are just starting out like i was a couple years ago.

Default Here's what I think...

Personally a female trainer would be far more helpful when training a male in the gym settting. It's a scientific fact a male will respond with more rationale and be more attentive to the sound of a female voice. Personally women that are trainers think or are wired differently than men are and have entirely different views about training that are really insightful as well as refreshing from the dogmaticly entrenched standard. But that's just my opinion.

Most personal trainers are hacks, but the best one I had was 50 and looked like crap. He was a Physical Therapist and a expert in nutrition, so looks are nothing IMO when it comes to trainers....hell most that look good are the worst trainers out there.

Most the female personal trainers in my previous gym did look like they needed the training more than the members. If a trainer looks out of shape I for one certainly wouldn't trust their advice.

I have seen one personal trainer at my current gym who gives the guys all they can take! She really pushes them to the limits and the guys I'm sure quietly appreciate her for that.

I have one now, but it is more for Taekwondo then weight lifting. All the kicking was literally kicking my butt. She helped me with some exercises to strengthen specific muscles to throwing front, side, and back kicks. She is also giving me pointers on toning up. She does Taekwondo also and actually does more weight then I do on those specific exercises to do with kicking, which is embarrassing, no wonder my legs kill me after class.

You can strengthen your legs for taekwondo by doing taekwondo!

The first months kicked my ass too but now the kicking work is easing up due to my legs being used to the hammering.

Hold onto something and practice side kicking 20 times how high you can get, then switch sides...

Then do this for hook kicks, front kicks, its a leg killer and will be a god send for your training.

What association are you? WTF, ITF, ITA or ATA

Then i guess he needed to practice what he preached.

It all depends really. If i were just starting out and knew nothing, then i would want a trainer who looked fit. But if you know your ****, and you get a trainer, regardless of their appearance you should be able to tell if they are legit once they open their mouth.

I am learning Kicho Hyung II Bu form now, got the leg work down but need to get the arms right. Association is ATA, Master Morris is instructor, he should be a fourth degree black belt shortly and has done Taekwondo for 30 years.
She has me doing weighted side kicks and front kicks, should be good to go kicking pretty fast that way. Squats helped dildly and nada for this, rofl.

Why??? He wasnt a fat slob he just didnt have any muscle, at 50 he looked better than 95% of people his age and he made bank training people....at 50 $$$$$ is 1000x more important than 18 inch arms.
