I have couple of doctors friends of mine. It is a long road, but if you have the dedication and patience, then go for it!
for me I am happy with what I have done and went through, so if I had to do it again, I would do the exact same thing.

My friends sister is in Med school right now, and she told me, make sure your undergraduate studies are something that you won't mind doing for the rest of your life, because everyone and their brother wants to go into med. Personally I am taking BSc in nutrition, starting next year, and if I don't get into med, I won't be stuck with some job I hate doing.

There's actually no pre-med school**. Most people major in bio so they meet all the prerequisite in medschool. So you can actually go to a university you like and be 'pre-med.' Just take all the required courses and maintain 3.5+ GPA. These are the required courses for Med school. You take these along with other prerequisites(of your current univ) to get the degree. Biology or Zoology - 1 year with lab Inorganic Chemistry - 1 year with lab Organic Chemistry - 1 year with lab Biochemistry - 1 semester Physics - 1 year with lab Calculus - 1 year English - 1 year Statistics course Speech course Right now I'm majoring in bio but I think I'm gonna switch to nursing. Coz after a year of nursing, you can go to work. I'd like to do that and still go to school at the same time coz med's gonna be expensive. Plus, people have more respect for you coz you actually know how to handle patients. But make sure you get the BSN not just some RN program coz med school actually want you to have atleast a bachelor's degree. **atleast in the US. There's pre-med school in the Philippines but I wouldn't like to do that coz when you decide to not be a doctor after 6 years of school, you still wouldn't have a degree to fall back to. You know what I'm saying? You basically just wasted 6 years of going to school.

MD - ok well im a 4th year bio major who is pre dental which is just about the same stuff that med has to do so let me give you some advice that i wish i had before starting out. first off its hard for most students to adjust to the college life. its way different from HS so be prepeared to study its competitive!! freshman year is hard specially in the dorms cuz all you wanna do is hang out with friends and party i mean its really fun but dont forget to study and not screw your GPA early. also START EARLY in extracurriculars like health internships, research, clubs, community service because you wanna show knowledge in the field and commitment. This brings me to another tip work on letters of reccomendation early (you need them to apply) so look to get close to the people of your extracurricular activities and also go to profesors' office hours and kiss ass. Also be prepared for the MCAT keep this test in mind while your taking your classes because it involves every science class you are gonna take ( all the bio, physics, G & O chem) plus an essay, reading comprehension, and math(only HS level though no calc <- i think). this means dont immediately forget everything after youve taken a class.
what i would change if i did it again 1)broke up with hs gf before college or at least early into it 2)tried a bit harder my first year 3)got into extracurriculars earlier (reasearch, community service, and dental) 4)went to profesor's office hours in the early classes I aced so i could have got letters from them 5) studied for the DAT(dental application test) earlier 6)took even just a couple more summer classes so that my last year isnt such a living hell like right now Quote:
you're filipino? i would consider doing dentistry in the Phillippines if i can get into any in the US. i mean it would definitely be cheaper and its faster but still that would be my last ditch effort Last edited by Fonz; 02-06-2006 at 01:23 PM. |
