I haven't gotten around to catching up on everyone here and what they are up to, so forgive me if this is posted somewhere....but what are you doing in 8 weeks? You must hear this all time time LOL but your legs are truly a work of art. What type of training do you do? You are an inspiration for me, silly! LOL

I have a friend who used to play socker in high school and competed in ice skating since from the time she could walk till a few years ago. Since she stopped, she has put on some weight, ok, more than just "SOME", but mostly, it resides in her thighs and butt. There is still a ton of muscle there from her extra curricular activities and she wants to not only lose the fat in those areas, butt and thighs, but trim the muscle down too.
My question is how does one trim down muscle? Lots of cardio? Any specific cardio? I know she will have to do cardio to lose the fat, but will that same cardio trim muscle?

None of our other horses seem remotely interested in the ball. Ajax really likes toys. He also likes to play his piano ![]() Sometimes he'll bust out of his stall and run over to the piano and tinker on it. He's not always so cute though...we've been having some power struggles (i guess this is what happens when you spoil them).

Your question is a good one, and in fact, multi-faceted. Firstly, as you stated, it's true that a layer of fat over an already-muscular area will make the appearance EVEN bigger. That's a no-braider. And that's why i'm so big hahaha j/k Often times girls (much to many a man's envy) have NO problem developing calves and legs. I'm not sure why or how. I've also heard that women can be "on par" to a man in terms of lower body strength, while this is not true for upper body. Generally speaking. Anyway. A lot of female physique athletes have a harder time gaining mass in their upper body to equal their lower body (and balance/symmetry is really important in physique sports, which is more like an art really). Typically, running is used to bring down muscle size in the legs. This is a bodybuilding tradition. Others avoid running like the plague in order to preserve their leg size. I have a male friend who's considerable in size but the moment he even looks at a tredmill his legs get smaller. He's ran marathons and kept a huge amount of upperbody size but ended up on toothpicks. So i've seen it and done it and the results seem to be true. A scientific reason perhaps would be because long-distance, steady-state style running/jogging uses primarily slow twitch fibers [type I]. Developed fast-twitch [type II] muscle fibers (like you see in sprinters, speedskaters, and any athlete that needs explosive power) have muscles that have big & round bellies. Genetics do play a part in this (the ratio of fiber types you're born with being one). But look at athlete groups---marathon runners have a "long & skinny" look, and compare that to other athlete groups. Like when you watch the olympics. Certain sports seem to have certain dominant "looks" and that is partially genetics, but also largely due to training style to excel at that given sport. So while i can't really explain EXACTLY how steady running works to make legs smaller in terms of muscle size (as it burns fat as well whcih also makes things smaller) it works in real life practice. Sprinting exercises is considered more as a way to develop fast-twitch fibers, but also used to really tighten up the ass area. Secondly, women tend to naturally store fat in hips/thighs/bum area thanks to our wonderful friend, estrogen. MOST women (and as usual, there are exceptions), the LAST place for the fat to come off is the legs and more specifically, upper ham & bum. The first place for fat to come off is your boobs. How is this fair?!? Estrogen is also related to some sort of alpha2 androgen fat receptor or something...please forgive me my biochem isn't all that advanced. But the "female fat pattern" areas (fat on hips/thighs/bum) is related to estrogen. I recently came across a thread on a forum where someone asked natural ways to reduce estrogen, i'll have to go back and check. There are obviously "medical" ways to reduce estrogen (used by both men and women in various circumstances). So. I really rambled on there, i'm sorry. I need to jsut get to the point---- I would suggest for your friend to take up some jogging. If she wants to continue weight training her legs, focus more on "sculpting" exercises like walking lunges and also keep things higher reps. By doing cardio, her overall bodyfat will be lowered which will obviously help the situation and also, a clean diet

But breaking a leg is a MAJOR concern and i don't like it when the horses get too excited in the snow or ice (so i have to take the ball away). We know what happens when a horse breaks their leg !!

Well not 8 weeks, more like 10, lol - but I will train hard for 8 to chill for a few. My first bbing comp is on 4/19. I am so excited yet so nervous. The diet is good, downpact. Cardio in check and weight training as well. I am more nervous about gettinig my posing down. I had found a coach to start working with and he fell thru for reasons on his end just this week, grrrrr so I am on the hunt again for one. I actually found a female coach that is local but does it PT, so I am waiting on her to get back to me. We have been chatting on myspace and she actually sent me some emails TODAY thru there but can't access them at work - can't wait to READ them tonight and see what she has in store. I also have to figure the suit thing out too. But first the posing and then the suit. Thanks on the legs.. even when they were fat, they were big, so now they have gotten pretty shredded, but I too will have to tone it down a bit in that dept - hence my friend calls me quadzilla, lol. Happy day PhatChick.. |
