Cougar has a spectacular aura about
Default Starting over

Hi all. I am new here. I am a 40 yr old female who has been lifting on and off since I was 16. Can't seem to stay consistent, but I really want to this time. Been consistent for about a month now. I am doing low carb. I am only down about #6 but my clothes are fitting better and I feel smaller. My s/o says I feel stronger.

My question for you gals is this:
What is to really be expected in the beginning? How fast does one gain muscle, realistically. Do we gain muscle before we lose fat?
I want the scale to go down. I am 188 and would be happy to see 150.

Any advice is welcomed!

Thanks

Welcome to the site Cougar,

I'm not a girl but I would start to loose weight first then later on work on developing more muscle. At least you have an idea what you need to work on later after some bf has been lost. However you can use light weights (dumbells) to tone up in the meantime.

You can do it,

No way, I never go light, I can't. There is something in me that wants to always push it and see how much I can do. The other day, I was back on track with doing my flys with #30 dumbbells. I get my strength back fairly quickly.

vasille, you should know that tonning has nothing to do with the weights u lift and everything to do with the way you eat. And lifting light? why? how does lifting light promote muscle generation?

Im glad to see that you dont lift light Cougar, and good luck with your progress

Well, I am still at it!!! I have lost another #8 but I look like I have lost more.
Just want to update this thread so newbies know that lifting works!

Having a hard time recoverying from my work outs. I started taking glutamine, but that didn't really help. Any suggestions are welcome.

Welcome aboard.

Women are now recommended to start resistance training (weight lifting) along with cardio and a proper diet to help lose weight in the most optimal way.

The more muscle you add, the faster your metabolism will become.

Well, poor recovery can be due to a number of issues. Diet/volume/frequency/intensity/sleep/genetics.

Post your routine and diet for starters.

Hi Traps, I am a little embarrassed to post my diet, it is not good.
I have been sticking to low carb and some of those choices are not the best, but here goes:

Breakfast - Coffee w/ cream, chicken breast and veg.
Mulit-vit., fish oil, vit-C, Venom 3.0 (1 a day)

Lunch - a big salad with lots of veg and a protien, blue cheese dressing (full fat) Sometimes I don't eat lunch.

Dinner - usually chicken or beef with steamed veg

I snack on pork rinds and sunflower seeds.
Some evenings I have hot chocolate made with half and half (lower carbs) and splenda.

I started taking Venom 3.0 about 2 weeks ago and it has just about deleted my appitite. I eat very little.
I drink about 2 qrts. or more of water a day.

I work out every other day. I would go more, but I am usually so sore.

Day 1
Cardio 30 min.
Legs:
Sqats 3x15/20
Hack squats 3x15/20
Incline squat 3x15/20
Lunges 3x20 holding 2 #10 weights

Second workout
Cardio 30 min
Chest and back
Incline press 3x#65 (bar)
Bench 3x#75
Flys 3x#30
--------------------------
Pull down 3x#75
Incline Rows 3x#50
Narrow grib pull down 3x#60

Third
30 min cardio
Shoulders/arms
Press
Side raises
--------------------------
Curls
tri-push downs

In addition, I walk an hour most nights.

Hey Cougar,
Just checking up on you. Have you added in more carbs? You really do need them to support your lifting.

Out of curiosity...have you ever read "The Abs Diet for Women?"
It's a quick read if you only pick it up for the diet information alone. But has some great female/hormone and age related information as well.

Hope all is going well with you.

I am down to 177. My friend says I look more like 160! Feeling good, but still having trouble recovering from my work outs. I take Venom 3.0 which suppresses my appetite so I know I need to eat more in the way of carbs.

Hawkwind, thanks, I will look into that book.

Down to 173#
My body has changed so much. Reading back, i see I lost 16# since my first post. I can just about get into all my old clothes even at this weight. So that is a big positive. My normal weight is 145-150.

The weight seems to come off fast at times, then it just stops.
I am learning to be patient with myself. I didn't get overweight overnight, it will take some time.

I like that I am healthier, more active, and feel better about me.

I have added hiking to my exercise outlet. I am really loving it.

That’s awesome, yeah you
It’s so hard to lose weight. I had a killer body a few years ago and then after surgery and some other medical problems I gained some weight and am just getting back to the gym now and it was so much easier when I was younger, lol
So how is your recovery going now?

Jamie, as you know -- consistancy! You go girl!

Recoverying is no longer a problem, not sure if it is because I am just in better shape, or if it is because of carbs. Due to all the hiking I do, I HAVE to take in more carbs.

Yep, it’s so hard. Well your biggest problem was recovery and you figured that one out, go you
