I have found that doing my crunches on an exercise ball allows me to get a much better contraction and helps me use a very small range of motion. Crunches are more effective this way and it is also easy to work the obliques. I bought mine at Wal-Mart and it was around $12.00.

I forgot to mention that doing them on the exercise ball also removes much of the negative aspects of sit-ups. No pressure on your lower back or neck so you can concentrate on getting the best contraction on each rep.

You can pretty much do anything with a ball - they're great.

I do love the day after a good ab workout.......oozing out of bed because you can't lift yourself up.....and then walking funny because you blasted your legs.....What a great day!!!

Good job Holly. Its nice to see you working out properly.

I'm sure someone has already stated this, but keep in mind that if you want abs you need a well balanced diet. You can do all the "perfect" crunches in the world, but if you aren't eating AT LEAST 5 meals a day you will not achieve the results you desire. I know how teenage girls like to "skip breakfast" because they think its helping them. I've dated plenty of them when I was in high school. Skipping breakfast is the absolute worst thing you can do for losing weight.

Good job Holly. Just make sure you keep to your diet and you're well on your way to the abs of your dreams.
I highly recommend an excercise ball too. Any excercise you do on the ball is basically working your core because you're trying to maintain your balance, so you need to keep your abs tight.
There are a lot of excercises with the ball that strictly target your abs too.
Dang...I love my ball.

Recently I have been seeing exercise ball bases. That should solve much of your problem. One of the main benefits I've noticed doing my crunches on the ball is that I can roll the ball with my legs while contracting and getting a really strong muscle contraction is not very difficult to achieve.
