I have been working out for years now, however, I'm training for the first time to compete. I'm reading tons of articles on Whey Protein. I was wondering if someone can better explain the best way to take this. I'm a 107 pound woman and want to tone and build some muscle.
Thanks CNP |

thank you for your reply. what i'm trying to figure out is, do i really need a protein shake to get the benfits i need in order to compete. without the shake, protein does already plan a huge part of my diet already. in the morning i have 3-4 egg whites, for lunch/post workout i have ground turkey and sometime a protein bar. do i truly "need" the shake to get in better shape.
again thanks for taking the time to expain. |

of course not, its just protein - you dont 'need' it, you already get it - its just whey's max bv is 157 - which makes it the heavyweight champ as far as quality - which also makes it very quick to get into your system because its so easy for the body to use it - it wont make a huge difference either way, but it is the best form of protein to have straight after a workout (pretty much the worsed otherwise)

As Savvy stated, and you mentioned your meal plan.. NO, you don't need it, it will not help you get "into better shape". It would just be additional calories you would have to take into consideration.

I would probably still take it, but only post workout. That is the only time I take mine and the only reason I do is that post workout your body needs protein that can be delivered to your muscles as quickly as possible. I think anyone that is interested in building muscle should have a post workout whey shake with water. Otherwise, though, food protein is best and should be the main source of your total daily protein intake.

After a night of sleeping your body is in starvation mode. Another good time to get some good protein in you is have a shake in the AM. Whole foods take time to break down and get those nutrients into your system. A whey shake in the AM is just as beneficial IMHO as after a workout, especially the day after your workout. But, to each his own. |

/\ Very true Sean. I sometimes (occasionally) take a shake in the morning too, but not always. I don't think the original poster really needs to worry too much about a morning shake IMO as she isn't really bulking.

In that case, My GF takes a shake in the AM as her meal. Low carb, high protein. |

Bliksiem, whey can be used to get you the proper amount of protein you need daily with no carbs (or almost no carbs, mine has 1 carb per serving). Use it after working out for quick uptake, and with a low carb diet, or do a cyclic carb diet where you have low/high/no carb days alternating. I do no carb days when not working out, and high carb on heavy workout days.
