For example, in the US they are trying to ban organic farming...even growing your OWN food. I bet not a lot of people knew that. This link is an overview of HR Bill 875: Campaign For Liberty — HR 875 The food police, criminalizing organic farming and the backyard gardener, and violation of the 10th amendment There is a link to the bill itself within the overview. Now, I'm not surprised if there isn't a big difference in nutriional content, albeit they admitted they found some difference. The problem is that article does not address the effects of pumping animals/plans with genetic material or growth horomones. There has been NO long term study on humans about this. What I can tell you that cancer rates are up, food allergy rates are up, all kinds of crazy **** is up and the only consistent thing that has happened in the past 100 years...technology increases (pollution, etc) and how our food is cultivated.

Not sure if anybody has had the chance to see the film "Food, Inc.", but it is incredible. Please go see it if you can. I think overall, organic isn't as important as just getting lots of natural, whole foods (as opposed to boxed, processed foods), but I do think if you know where you food comes from, you can make more educated choices about what you're putting into your body.
Let's look at the cow, for example... A cow that was grass fed it's entire life is going to be getting the diet it was made it eat (not grains). This means the chance e coli drops (the bacteria grows very easily in the stomachs of cows that are grain fed). This also means that the cow is naturally getting omega 3 & 6 fatty acids in its diet. The meat and milk produced by the cow in turn are higher in those same fatty acids. I think with certain veggies or other items, it doesn't make a huge difference whether or not you buy organic, but there are some items in which it there is a huge difference in the organic version. Also check out, "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan if this type of thing really interests you! |
