Default How can I eat enough for growth of muscles and not belly?

The only time I see significant muscle gain is when I eat a lot. But, in addition to my body swelling up my belley seems to follow suit. I typically start the day with breakfast around 8 of a ham sandwich, coffee, and sometimes humus and pita bread if i am really hungery.

Then around 10:30 I suck down a double stacked protien shake.

11:30 go work out for an hour.

12:30 protien shake

2:30 snack of plain deli meat

6:30 dinner high in protien with side of veggies.

I figure I am running at around 2500 calories a day with attention being made to eating lean.

How can I get my daily calorie/protien intake without making my stomach swell up. It's not all fat I just alway feel bloated.

Before I worked out my diet was really light and I have never liked eating too much. Do I need to buy stock in tuna and chicken breast or what?

You obviously need a surplus of calories to gain, but the "type" of calories you are to consume
will definitely be a deciding factor in how much fat v.s. muscle you gain..
It definitely not just about the "amount" of calories consumed.

Example 1 - 3,000 calorie diet consisting of donuts, sugar, soda, low protein, high carb, etc...
Example 2 - 3,000 calorie diet mainly consisting of lean meats, good carbs, veggies, low sugar etc...

Both are 3,000 cal diets, but there is a major difference between the 2 isnt there?

Some good advice is to stay away from sugars, candy and junk food like potato chips, soda, etc...
Eat more protein, lean meats, good carbs and good fats.
AS mentioned by Jlo, sodium is something you also need to be aware of as well.

However, there is a bit more to it than just the above, such as meal timing, etc....

.

Cool, thank you all.

It looks like I will be stocking my office fridge with cottage cheese and fresh fruit. At home I will be making extra meat to bring to work and break fast will be more driven towards eggs and oatmeal. I think I will invest in more of those tuna foil packs and develop a taste for it.

DannyBoy9, those articles are very helpfull. Thank you!

believe it or not, i have used recipes from the South Beach Diet cookbook. it actually has alots of really good healthy recipes. Low sugar, low fat, high protien recipes and its really good stuff too. like shrimp stir fry (38g of proteind), lots of high protien chicken dishes. its not your typical diet. if you are one to count your protien / fat gram intake (which i'm not) it makes it easy because it has the breakdown for every recipe.

South Beach diet is good stuff. Even their prepackaged stuff you can buy isn't that bad. Besides the sodium, of course.

South Beach sounds better than what I was considering:

breakfast: 3 boiled eggs, bannana, oatmeal.
Lunch: plain tuna, cottage cheese, and broccoli
Dinner: 2 baked chicken breasts, spinach salad, and a bread stick.

I am starting to think that beer may be part of the problem too. I am seriously considering some major changes to my habits/vices. I really want to get my body in shape and I seem to be my own greatest obstical. Being in New Orleans with Daiquiri shops and bars on every corner does not help either...
