Default What do you consider a work set?

I see a lot of you big, expereince mofo's don't count warm up sets in your workout, as I don't htink you should; however, I do notice a lot of the following as a simple example:

Bench press
300x2x3
350x1x4
400x2x3
225x1x10

I look at that and to me, if I could life that much weight, 300 seems to not be a work set...but I believe you consider it one.

So what is your personal definition of a "work set"?

work set - something that is going to make me work.

I would consider that a work set in this scenario. If this person had 2 warm up sets, he's still really 'warming up' with this set. You need to get your body accustomed to heavy weight before jumping to the big stuff.

At the same time, not sure why they went from 400 to 225x10. If you are going to lift heavy, then lift heavy. If you are going to lift for reps, then lift for reps.. not getting stronger by mixing it, not getting endurance by mixing it. I would have went to 425x2x1.

I agree with hrp. If it makes me work. I would call the 300 an acclimation set in this case.

but like u said, its a personal definition. I guess it only matters if u r one of those ppl that obsesses with numbers of set. I simply train by instinct and my body's response during training.
