Default Top-Grip Curls

When I'm in the gym sometimes I see people curling a bar with the palms of their hands above the bar as opposed to underneath it. Is there some advantage to this? Why are they doing it?

Reverse grip? Some do that for forearm work - no real need if you're doing heavy deadlifts though.
