I heard that some ppl do not isolate traps much at all and incorporate it into the deads. That never really worked for me, I have to do shrugs to build that muscle. That helped me a lot to perform squats without the bar sinking into my spine. But then again, I dont do deads on regular bases so I had to do shrugs.

It would be fine to hit just the peaks of your traps with shoulders but whether you like it or not you are gonna be banging your middle/lower traps every time you do heavy rows, its essential to get a thick back.
