Thumbs up I Did It

Finally tried deadlifts today

started with a empty Olympic bar (45lbs) and after 1 set added another 20lbs.....I left my ego at the door My lower back felt ok doing them.

Everyone here advised me to add them to my back workout but I felt the burn more in my legs. Am I doing something wrong ?

I was doing the standard dead lift, don't think my lower back could handle the stiff legged type (yet anyways)

woo hoo!
You should definitely feel it in your lower back more if your form is good. What type of injury to your lower back do you have? I know that you want to start out with lighter weight...but do you think 85 lbs might be too light? It could be that the weight is not difficult enough so you don't feel it in your lower back, more in your legs just because of the different movement/position that you are not used to.

I dunno.

Stiff-legged would be for leg day IMO-hamstring exercise.

Glad to see you adding DL's to the routine but put some weight on that bar man! My 130lb wife was pulling 150lbs for reps her first time. Im not sure what you weigh or what your stats are but if your a male then 150lbs should be light enuff to perfect your form.

I guess you're form wasn’t right or maybe you're back is naturally stronger then you're leg. Can you film yourself and post so we can analyze?

Otherwise this is pretty standard form:
Squat

When youre only doing the bar or the bar with 10's, youll be starting from much lower than if you had 45's on there. Thats why he's feeling it more in the legs.

In my experience, with lower weight its real hard to control the movement properly, and your lowerback most likely wont be affected. Id say try at least 135, you can get the proper height and have some decent resistance. Just remember to keep your back straight and you will be fine.

I thought the same thing, I was going much lower than the video shows. Thats probably why I feel it in my legs more.

Next week I'll add more weight

You asked about doing stiff leg style, here is my experience with it.

I did deadlifts for a few months before even thinking about stiff leg deads. Once I hit the 3 plate mark on deads (315lbs), I started doing the stiff leg style. I figured by then my lower back was definately strong enough to take the weight of stiff leg style on its own, so I started out light with them and now I am doing stiff leg deads at about 175lbs and I feel like there is still more strength left for me to move up higher with them. I would say use standard deads for a while to get your back used to the idea of lifting weight and then move on to the stiff leg deads later. No need to rush into it.

I myself prefer SLDL over regular DL's (my scraped up shins thanked me for that) i felt like i was just doing a squat again. Give them a try i find it's easier to perfect your form with SLDL. You may not be able to do as much weight initially but i find i get a better stretch in the muscles and after a heavy session you walk away feeling like you actually accomplished something. Though you may be over coming a back injury i agree with others, go a little bit heavier that way you can 'feel' the movement.

I think I'll stick to the standard style for awhile.

Just watching the stiff leg deads makes my back hurt

SLDLs and Deads are really two different movements targeting different groups of muscles.

It isn't, I do these rather than these, etc.

SLDL is pretty much an isolation exercise while the standard style is about as compound as you can get. I have incorporated both into my routine, but on separate days.

Well, not really.

SLDLs hit the hams, ass, core, lower back....
