Whey is a supplement and should only be used as such.
supplement : an addition to something to increase its size or make up for a deficiency But your question really pertains to vegetarian bodybuilding. I do know this, relying on Whey for your protein is better than not having protein in the diet at all. But you do know that you can get your protein from plenty of other non-meat sources right? Eggs, Tofu, Garbanzo beans, etc . Last edited by BiggerGuns=LongerDrives; 05-29-2008 at 10:05 AM. |

I'm in the same boat bud
been vegan for 10 years now and yes I get protein from beans, tofu, vegetarian meat subs but the majority of my protein comes in the form of WHEY. WHEY is the only animal source food I eat now because you can't beat the bio-availability of WHEY The only thing it can hurt is your wallet..lol

I dont have eggs either. And yea, cheese tofu garbanzo beans soya, there are several protein sources, but when increasing intake to say 250gms or so, whilst keeping calories in check, wont whey suplements be a better option??? And from what i read here in the posts, its da most complete form, and has da highest biological value...m using ON 100% whey gold btw...
so say if i get abt 150gms from suplements..and abt 50-100 gms from foods, wud dat still work, or most of it shud come from foods?? |

The problem with protein shakes is that it's not broken down properly by the body like whole foods. Foods get metabolized slowly and have other vitamins and minerals in them that allows the body to use the protein properly. Whey gets metabolized much more quickly and the body typically doesn't know what to do with that much protein at once so most of it gets wasted. Depending on whey as your main source of protein will get you little to no results. You will, however, get your normal newbie gains when you start lifting but those will come with or without whey.

OK....so m confused now...from the conflicting opinions here...... Do proteins coming mainly from whey in the diet provide less gains compared to proteins coming mainly from whole foods then?? |

If you want to remain vegetarian, you will have to supplement your protein intake with WHEY if you want to body build.
There are some who will say that the vegetarian diet provides sufficient protein for daily requirements but I've never seen a successful vegetarian bodybuilder get by on the min requirements. As a vegetarian myself there just isn't enough quality protein available in the vegetarian diet without supplementation. The advantage of supplementing your protein source is your not adding a bunch of extra calories, fat and carbs to get it. Beans for example have lots of protein but have you seen the carb numbers on them ?....wow

Umm....i recently lost abt 16 kgs...nd have one more week to go till i stop cardio nd starvation diet... Keeping calories in check IS a concern for me. Yea i know bulking up will involve gaining fat weight too...bt wna jus keep dat to as low as possible.. EEEYEA....i was just browsing Optimum Nutrition website...they have a product called ANY WHEY...its an "Unflavored Blend of Premium Whey Proteins" as mentioned on the site, and it says.... "Optimum Nutrition's 100% ANY WHEY Protein is the perfect complement to any meal or snack. This virtually tasteless powder is fat FREE with 17 grams of protein and only 1 gram of carbohydrates. 100% ANY WHEY Protein is the ideal cooking partner. Add a scoop to your yogurt, prepare a protein packed turkey pot pie or whip up a quick protein omelet." Umm....so does this work?? From what i have heard on this post, combining whey with meals and depend on whey for most of the proteins, isnt as effective. U guys r the xperts...m just gna start bulking up for the first time ever in my mife...when for the first time i have actually managed to loose a significant amount of weight. Have always been obese. And being a vegetarian, i know its hard for me to be gna cook up protein meals evrytime. Just want to make the process as well as i can manage. Last edited by shomeesharma; 05-31-2008 at 12:53 PM. |
