Default New All-Protein "Diet"

Hey there. Well, beach season is coming up, and I want to shed a few pounds as well as put on some muscle. I decided that I wanted to try to not eat carbs, and mainly consume protein. I have never really taken any supplements, and I'm not a hardcore gym goer: I go on jogs, and lift weights with my friends on a daily basis. I am planning on buying some whey protein to drink in the morning with my breakfast (usually oatmeal) and after workouts. I guess I'm a real beginner looking for some help. Can you give some suggestions on all-protein diets, and some other tips to get me off on the right foot? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Cutting carbs out completely is a bad idea. You need good energy for your body to burn while working out and being active else you risk entering a catabolic state and tearing down your muscle instead of fat.

Most people wanting to diet and workout simultaneously suggest a 40/40/20 split. 40% Protein, 40% Carbs, 20% fats. That is ofcourse referring to your daily caloric intake. You'd be hard-pressed to find anybody with a solid or toned body who would suggest using an Atkins approach to dieting for working out.

Before I get too carried away... this post is probably better suited for the Diet and Nutrition section since you're referring specifically to your diet.

This made me LOL.

Gill has it right - you need some carbs in your diet to help fuel your workouts. Don't eliminate all carbs - you'll shoot yourself in the foot.

Carbs are important dude, you need them, esepcially before and after working out and in the mornings. After 7pm you may choose to cut them out, but thats just a time limit so that extra carbs arent stored as fat when you go to bed.

Other than that, you need carbs.
