Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's)
Most of us don't realize that 'good fats' fats actually regulate cholesterol and reverse high blood pressure. Bad fats do not. This is a fact. Essential fats or 'good fats' do not make you fat like bad fats do. The body instantly recognizes them as ‘good’ for you and puts them to use for healing and growth as soon as you take them. Good fats act as anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and also produce fat burning enzymes. This is a good thing because it means that in order to lose fat, we need fat, Good fat! This I know is what many bodybuilders fail to realize. Too often we are told that cutting fat from the diet will help you lose fat and maintain a lean physique, but what they fail to mention is that the human body requires good essential fats in the diet to get rid of body fat. No more confusion guys. If you're on a no or low fat diet, START supplementing with essential fats TODAY! Deficiencies of essential fats can also alter the balance of calcium. Supplementing with essential fats helps improve the use of calcium by the body. Cells will retain calcium better and they are less likely to lose it through leaky membranes. Thus muscle contractions (which are controlled through calcium ions) can be made more efficient, also the kidney works more effectively reabsorbing calcium. In addition to the above fats are also essential for the production of sex hormones, in particular testosterone. Essential fats such as the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseed as well as saturated fats are essential for normal testosterone production. All steroid hormones are produced from cholesterol and when fats are deficient in the diet, this process will be inhibited. Studies clearly indicate that low fat diets results in lower testosterone levels while those higher in protein, lower in carbohydrate and moderate in fat cause the greatest sustained levels of testosterone and growth hormone. So act now and start adding these fats to your diet!
