I am looking to build lean muscle while increasing strength. Not fat, but would like to tone up. Besides hard work at the gym, (right now I am lifting 3-4 times a week and doing cardio 2-3 times a week) what supplements should I consider to help increase strength, lose body fat, and promote good health. This is what I am considering:
-A Protein shake -MRP - to help supplement vitamins, minerals, and needed protein and carbs for post workouts -creatine -hmb *Was considering buying Betagen, a combination of the 2 (creatine, hmb) -fish oil -multi-vitamin This is an expensive stack of supplements, would like to get the real nuts and bolts of supplementation down to the bare bone necessities. Any info would be most helpful! Also, where can I get research on supplements? Thanks in advance! mike |

1. Protein Powder 2. Multi Vitamin 3. Fish oil / flaxseed oil 4. Creatine Your lifting, cardio & diet is all you need at this stage to help reduce bodyfat. |

protein and fish oil seem to be the essential basics, plus a good diet, creatine works for many people but id get into training properly first (few months at least) before you spend you money on creatine.

Take all the money all these supplement would cost, you go into the closest grocery store and by some good food first. The most important thing is food. Good food.
-Tuna -Rice -Chicken -Cottage Cheese -Fruit -Vegetable -Meat -Etc... I don't know if you're a newbie or not but that's the best advise I can give you with what I know of you. Witch is nothing. If you want to build muscle I think you would need to cut back a little on the cardio 3 times a week seems like a lot. To get bigger you need to eat big and lift hard. |

I am experienced in lifting... I have been lifting off and on for years. Just want to take it to the next level. I am on a decent diet and I am continuing to tighten it up every day. Tons of water, fish, chicken, yogurt... now ready to supplement.
yes, I was referring to a TUB of protein.. lol I like what cammo suggested.... but why no HMB? What about Glutamine and ZMA? cammo's suggestion 1. Protein Powder 2. Multi Vitamin 3. Fish oil / flaxseed oil 4. Creatine *** Again, THANKS! mike |

I also don't think HMB is worth the money spent on it. That list was my top 4. If you were to get more, I would suggest BCAA powder first & then ZMA (I take seperate magnesium, zinc & b6 supps before bed... ![]() It's cheaper in the long run. |

It really depends.
If there's no possible way you can manage to gat a balanced meal after a workout then it'll have to do - I personally would just have a regular protein shake (with 40-50gms of protein) straight after my workout & then have a proper meal 30mins to an hour after that. MRP shakes are nowhere near as good a a proper meal but may help if it's impossible to have a meal (I normally just cook extra meals the night before and take one with me if I am unable to cook a feed wherever I am after my workout). If by your question you are asking if it is too much to have a protein shake & a MRP together at the same time PWO, then the answer is yes. You will only be able to digest around 40-50gms of protein in one sitting so taking any extra is just a waste. Last edited by Cammo; 03-13-2007 at 04:19 PM. |

I see a lot of people on hear suggesting soon after taking your postworkout shake that you have a meal preferibly with a lean meat. My question is why? Just wanted to know the basics behind it. I have been doing it, usually have a chicken breast or steak and multigrain pasta or brown rice.
Also is powerade a good carb to have right after your workout with the shake to help get the protein absorbed quickly? |

The PWO shake is for that first initial "quick hit" of protein that your muscles are crying out for - having poweraid in your shake is a good idea (I personally just put a scoop of glucose in my shake).
The quick fix of protein will also help stop your muscles eating into themselves after your workout (it's known as a "catabolic" state). It will tide you over until you manage to get you PWO meal (which is one of the most important meals of the day - your body has just worked really hard & you need to replace the energy spent as well as load up on vitamins & minerals to help the repair work).
