Well, here is a brief overview on amino acids. They are the building blocks of protein. There are 21 amino acids.
These amino acids are divided into 2 groups..1. Essential and Non-Essential. Essential meaning that we must get these amino acids from the foods we eat. Non-essential means the body can produce those aminos from other amino acids. Below are the name of the amino acids. The first column is the essential amino acids and the second column is the non-essential amino acids. Histidine Alanine Isoleucine Arginine Leucine Aspartic Acid Lysine Cysteine Methionine Cystine Phenylalanine Glutamic Acid Tryptophan Glutamine Valine Glycine Threonine Proline Serine Tyrosine BCAA's are Branched Chain Amino Acids. These are the most crucial when it comes to your muscles. They make up around 35 % of your muscle mass. The 3 BCAA's are.... Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. BCAA's are metabolized in the muscle not the liver like other amino acids. They spare muscle tissue from being used for energy during intense exercise. Leucine being the most crucial of the 3. Leucine is key to protein synthesis. I believe Layne Norton said that leucine is 10 x more potent in protein synthesis than other aminos. I only supplement with extra BCAA's. I take Xtend by Scivation. I take these around my weight training sessions as well as my HIIT cardio sessions. I, personally do not supplement with the regular amino acids. I feel I get plenty with the foods I eat and the whey shakes I consume around my training as well. I hope this gives you a basic idea of what amino acids are. Here is the link to the sticky on specific amino acids that dannyboy started.. A Closer Look at Amino Acids
