Ok, so there have been quite a few questions about fish oil lately, and I have had nothing to do so I've decided to do all the research for you guys. This is a comilation of information from articles, newsletters, and books I have found. You may have seen some of this posted before by myself, but I think its best to consolidate the information. Enjoy!
This is from Dr. Chris Mohr, PhD about fish oil pills: "They kick ass---general health, 2-4 g/day. Elevated TG I would go higher, increasing in a stepwise manner, up to 8g or so (not a blanket statement, but individualized). Always speak with MD first since it does decrease clotting time...contraindicated if on blood thinning medications. Preliminary research with weight loss shows it's promising---2-3 studies to my knowledge. I do believe higher quality fish oils are important. Fish oil shouldn't give you fishy burps or taste fishy at all. Two favorites are Nordic Naturals and Carlson. Fish oils are screened very well for mercury and other contaminants, particularly ones like NN and Carlson. " From Dr. John Berardi, PhD "Fish oil, high in EPA and DHA, should be a staple of everyone’s diet. We recommend the concentrated kind, standardized for between 30% and 60% combined EPA and DHA..." Ok so now, we've come to the conclusion that Fish Oil Omega 3 is the most important for health concerns. We've also learned that you should only get high quality fish oils. EPA and DHA should make up about 30-60% of the serving. For general health, from what I've seen of the high quality pills, you need only take 1 serving of the provided pill. However, there are major health benefits of taking in more. Again, this is from Dr. John Berardi, PhD "Recently, studies have also shown that taking a few grams of EPA and DHA per day can speed up metabolic rate by about 400 kcal per day. Imagine that, pop 2-3 fish oil capsules with each meal and you can afford to eat an additional meal each and every day. Talk about exciting news. So if you’re interested in improving your health and speeding up your metabolism, swim upstream with the salmon. Ten grams of total fish oil – or about three grams of combined EPA and DHA – per day can boost metabolism while boosting your health substantially." Ok so from this, you can see that 1 serving of fish oil pills will not get you there. Its not as important for the total fish oil count, but more important for the 3g of EPA and DHA. The following links I will provide takes you to pills that provide about 1g of combined EPA and DHA per serving. Taking 1 serving prior to each of three main meals should net you the effects of a boosted metabolism plus all the health benefits. http://www.naturalgreens.com/ProdDetail.asp?ProdID=290 heres a site with a good one. 40 bucks for a whole months supply if you take 3 servings a day. http://www.naturalgreens.com/ProdDetail.asp/ProdID/217 Another good one. Take six a day to get the 3g of DHA/EPA for a boosted metabolism. 30 bucks for a months supply here. This is the one I'd purchase if I were to purchase pill versions http://vitaminlady.com/Carlson_Labs/Liquid_Omega_3.asp This is Carlson's liquid version. 25 bucks for 500mL. 1 serving is 5mL(1 tsp) and you need to take only three servings a day. Thats a good deal. http://www.vitaminlady.com/Carlson_L...ega_3_oils.asp Carlson pill version. 46 bucks for 41 day supply (about 40 bucks for 30). Take 6 pills a day(2 at each of three meals). The liquid versions are a bit cheaper. only problem is you have to refrigerate them.... but u could take them in a protein shake or just from a spoon or in a salad dressing? When looking for your own pills make sure of the following: 1. ITS GOOD QUALITY! No fishy smell or taste, etc. 2. Make sure the DHA/EPA level add up to about 1,000mg(1g) per serving. 3. Buy liquid versions if you want to save money Last edited by PhiSigPhi; 08-22-2006 at 03:44 AM. |

The only problem I see with those fish oils is they aren't salmon fish oil. Let me know what you think of these...

Also, to get the 3g of DHA/EPA from those pills you'd have to take 10 pills a day. The genetic make up of Omega 3 fatty acides as well as DHA/EPA I would assume(and only makes sense) would be the same in any fish that contains it. Its probably just cheaper b/c its easier to mass produce the oil from Salmon than After some more research, it also seems Salmon has a little bit more cholestoral per serving (20mg v 15mg) and more calories per g of DHA/EPA too. I'll continue researching and post any new info I can find. I woudl go with something like this just for convience. Thats a good site you found http://www.vitacost.com/CarlsonSuperOmega3FishOils 6 pills to get 3g of DHA/EPA and is Carlson and less calories 54 vs 90 of the salmon for the 3g of DHA/EPA. The other fish just seem to have a higher concentration of DHA/EPA compared to salmon. Its made from Deep water fish which is from what I found the only big concern. But either way, it would be fine IMO. Last edited by PhiSigPhi; 08-22-2006 at 06:25 AM. |

I just started this week being that I got home recently from Iraq and was unable to get such fine quality supplements there. I'm going to keep everyone posted on if the weight loss thing seems to be true or not as well as the other benefits listed.
